Bastian: I know books, I have 186 of them at home.

Mr. Koreander: Ah, comic books.

Bastian: No, I’ve read Treasure Island, The Last of the Mohicans, Wizard of Oz, Lord of the Rings, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Tarzan.

Mr. Koreander: Your books are safe. While you’re reading them, you get to become Tarzan or Robinson Crusoe.

Bastian: But that’s what I like about ’em.

Mr. Koreander: Ahh, but afterwards you get to be a little boy again.

Bastian: Wh-what do you mean?

Mr. Koreander: Listen. Have you ever been Captain Nemo, trapped inside your submarine while the giant squid is attacking you?

Bastian: Yes.

Mr. Koreander: Weren’t you afraid you couldn’t escape?

Bastian: But it’s only a story.

Mr. Koreander: That’s what I’m talking about. The ones you read are safe.

Bastian: And that one isn’t?

I suspect Baldo gets cast as a troll.

At least it was not the bano.

One of my favorite books and might have been the first book that I read for pleasure.

A good book takes you places and then disappears in your hands.

My wife and I were just discussing handing a Tolkien book to our oldest grandson.

I rarely give up on a book once I have started. This was one of them. Catcher in the Rye was another.

I truly enjoy disappearing into a book.

Gracie’s been transported into another world.

That’s the great thing about books, its YOUR world. Movies are a world made by committee, with focus groups and all that. They can be spectacular, but it is still not YOUR world.

I have fond memories of falling asleep reading this book when they forced in on us in high school. I’m pretty sure I never made it past the first chapter.

Books can do that…

It’s like the creators of this strip want nothing more than to make thousands of READ posters for schools and libraries. Problem is majority of people and kids won’t know who the heck this pipsqueak is. Lucky.

I’m betting if she wants, she could walk through those clothes, through the back of the closet, into Narnia, as well.

I can remember a time in the late 60’s when as a kid I could have read like that. Now I need good light and a comfortable chair with neck support!!!

Well her imagination is alive and well!

There and back again.

I haven’t read the Hobbit. And don’t have any desire to do so. I haven’t seen any of the movies either. Have a Marvelous Monday my friends.

A hard Hobbit to break.

I remember that happening to me. I still think I’m part hobbit. I’m short, chubby, love to and I love to go barefoot, anyway.

When my niece was born (first of our niblings and now in her early 30s) we did not know what to get her as baby gift. We wanted something to show how precious she was to us. I remembered that when I was born I got 2 books – “A Child’s Garden of Verses” and a child’s version of “Little Women” (and pencils with my name on them). All gifts, but especially the books still cherished by me. I can still recite from memory (in my late 60s) my favorite parts of Child’s Garden as well as parts of Little Women and I became a major fan of Louisa May Alcott from this and have a good sized library of her books (some of them early editions) and books about her. So books it was for her – of course a copy each of the two I had received were included. We wrote an inscription in each book as to why we picked that book for her.

A few years later her brother followed and we bought him an assortment of boys books (not easy as husband did not become a READER until he was in high school and had not gotten books as child. The books in each case cover a variety of years – including bathtub books and picture books. I made sure he got a copy of the Complete Sherlock Holmes. My dad (deceased by the time nephew was born) had been a major fan of Holmes and taught me how to figure out the solutions to the stories (and other mysteries) when I was young.

We continued this with husband’s first niece when she was adopted – but in his family (other than by him) reading is not prized and his sister was insulted with the gifts – no gold. So we just bought his second niece some clothes or similar when she was adopted (gold being beyond our budget).

My nephew is actually a step-nephew and he came into our lives too late to buy him a gift for arriving.

I started on The Hobbit when I was not much older than Gracie. It was magical and I have always loved those kinds of stories ever since then! ❤️
