Looking it up, turns out the fireplace is an intermediate step. Wood ashes can be added to compost or used as lawn and garden fertilizer.

Except the matter is all still there. It’s just that it changed form.

Quite a bit of it went up the chimney too. :-)

The joke of course is that people who have children (or pets for that matter) do experience forms of matter being destroyed and also created, but the fact is that Lavoisier had no children. He did leave a widow, who eventually received all of his property after it was determined he was wrongly convicted and guillotined.

I love my Weber Smokey Mountain smoker, but hate cleaning it afterwards. Ash, and a greasy pan with greasy water, plus the grates.
