The summaries of the studies that I have read state that exercise alone is not an effective weight-loss strategy. And “alone” is the key word.
Speaking from my personal experience, I have found that I lost the most weight by eating properly and exercising. I did indeed lose weight by eating properly only and by exercising only but not as much as by combining the two.
Arlo is right (for the vast majority of people, not everyone). My diet is pretty much what I can get cheapest for now, but I walk as much as I can. This can be up to 15 miles a day in the colder days (this is Florida of the hellish temps). I LIKE walking, but it has never affected my weight at all.
She needs some music while she walks. I keep mine low enough that I can hear what’s going on around me, but the beat keeps my feet moving at a decent pace.
Also, she should try going somewhere in particular – garage sales, thrift stores, grocery stores, and the pharmacy are all on my list. Some people like to walk with friends, but my friends walk slowly and rarely.
The perfect diet was listed recently on the comic “PreTenna.” The exercise is “Put down the fork and go for a walk.” The first part is more important for weight lost, but the last part is important for other reasons. Exercising burns calories much more slowly than eating adds them.
Exercise is great and has multiple benefits, but I highly suggest everyone over 40, regardless of weight, take a good look into the benefits of intermittent fasting! And in combination with the healthy form* of a ketogenic diet, even better! Proper nutrition is the best preventive AND curative medicine! My saying about it is, “I came for the weight loss (done!) and stayed for all of the other health benefits!” (cancer prevention, slowing the aging process via stem cell and growth hormone production, re-setting the immune system, hormone regulation, Alzheimer’s prevention, reversing diabetes, PCOS, etc.) Wish I had known about it 10 years ago. Maybe sounds “alternative” and like the next diet craze, but I expect it to become mainstream over the next decade or so. "Calories in, calories out/eat less, move more/grazing/low-fat, and ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’ " are all old-school — look at us as a culture? Has it been working? Educate yourself and be amazed like I am….
lots and lots of veggies, plus fats and protein from salmon, nuts, avocados, etc. Once you fully adapt to keto, you can occasionally eat healthy carbs. And with Stevia, etc., you can have sweet treats.YouTube and books by Valter Longo and Jason Fung are good places to start.
I use to walk for half an hour to an hour every day. Now with my foot problems I can’t. Just to the store and back and not every day. Diet is essential. Muscle weight is better than fat weight.
A walk may only burn 150 calories, but if you do it on a regular basis, your base metabolism rate increases and that can lead to real weight loss. As long as you don’t stop for more than a short time.
In middle-age or older, the main way to lose weight is thru dietary changes/calorie reductions. But the best way to feel healthier physically, and often emotionally too, is with regular aerobic exercise. Obviously, exercise does at least help with weight loss or weight control, too. But exercising away very much extra weight (I don’t mean only the 2 or 3 or 5 lbs that Janis wants to lose) without any diet changes can be fairly tough, unless you’re putting in more than a couple hours of exercise most days.

Brushing your teeth last night didn’t prevent any cavities. May as well give that up, too.

Get your lazy a## husband to walk with you. Amazing conversations will happen.

As someone who lost thirty pounds on an exercise regimen that consisted exclusively of walking, I must disagree.

Arlo is wrong. I used to walk vigorously (about 5 mi/hour) for up to 45 minutes a day. Lost plenty of weight. Why did I stop? None of your business.

Arlo might be right, but I’ve been getting good results from walking an hour a day. Over the past year I’ve gone from house sized down to single wide.
