I reckon it’s Jimmy himself in the strip. Search online for ‘Jimmy Johnson cartoonist’ images and you’ll find one or two photos of the man himself. (He doesn’t do himself justice, IMO!)
In answer to the question posed in today’s strip, no, I have never wondered why cartoonists use a lot of coffee gags. nor do I ever expect to wonder about it. I also have zero interest in a cartoonist’s mascot, if any. Today’s strip is extremely yawn-worthy.

That’s Oliphant’s penguin. Oliphant was the cartoonist in the Adelaide Advertiser when I was a boy. Then he got a job in Denver, USA.

Same reason their characters play a lot of golf, I’d imagine – working to your own hours must have some benefits.

Has JJ ever done any gags about being confused w/other Jimmie Johnsons??

No but now I do. Why? Adam @ Home, Rudy Cafe, and another defunct strip I loved about a Zen sort of cafe made it their stock in trade.

Looks like the equivalent of a bad hair day for JJ. Do they call it Doodler’s Block?

Ah yes, the old “Oliphant in the living room” gag!

I always enjoy the arcs in “Get Fuzzy” when Darby Conley “rips off” Pearls Before Swine. His drawings of himself and his ethics are really funny.

My OCD notices that the inside of the 19 in the date is not filled in. Aargh! Why can’t I draw on a computer screen?!

Especially, Adam @ Home. BTW, thanks for the reminder it’s time to get the coffee started.
