I learned very little in elementary school. Most of my early education came from reading at home. My Mother made a very firm rule: I could read as many science fiction and adventure books as I wanted, BUT I had to read three non-fiction books for every five fiction books.
At a new school, a librarian wanted to limit the number of books I checked out. She claimed I wasn’t reading them. When I got home, Mom was so mad, she drove us back to the school.
“Your job is encourage children to read. I know he reads them because he talks about what reads all the time. If I EVER hear that you have denied him a book, you WILL be looking for another job.”

That’s my Mom.
