Okay, Ziggy will just sing another song… hopefully before another copyright attorney doesn’t show up (and then another, and then another…)

Were that me, the attorney would be treated to completely free colourful language laced with ancestral references and suggestions as to where he could put his briefcase…

ASCAP and BMI are extortionists…talk to any bar or nightclub owner about them.

Copyright is out of control. It should be limited and regulated like patents, not a method and means of making money without working or adding real value to your life. Too many people think that if their grandfather wrote a book they should be able to live off the royalties, too many companies use copyright to create a forever long means of exploiting movies or songs they “own” so executives can make six digits while the people actually working consider food stamps.

First, there are no copyright issues with private use; commercial use is where copyright applies.

Second, I find it more than a little hypocritical, given that the author of this strip inherited it from his father, and the strip itself is copyrighted (very fine print lettering up the left edge of the panel, from this perspective).

Even though this is a GoComics webpage, it has © Ziggy and Friends, Inc. – All Rights Reserved. And the strip is about copyright abuse?? Get real.

I once was on the board of a non-profit folk festival. ASCAP came calling to demand a blanket fee. We didn’t pay, but had to make sure that none of our performers (all volunteer) played any tune or sang any song that was under copyright.

5 years ago I purchased a DVD of “Petticoat Junction”

It was a collection of the earlier black and white episodes.
I loaded it up in the player, started watching it, and realized all the original theme song and music on the soundtrack had been replaced due to copyright issues..Very disappointed.

A situation that is much closer to reality than many may think.
