    Yup! Understand the REASONING behind the rule rather than following it blindly…

    Also if the lady was dressed he probably just touched the fabric of her clothes and not her actual flesh. Loophole!

    I really love this saying. It reminds me of the importance of not holding onto grudges indefinitely. The younger monk’s error was not in refusing to help the woman, it was in fuming and internally raging about the older monk’s action.

    An excellent tale in separating the spirit of the law from the letter of the law.

    @Darwinskeeper

    What I got from the story was what the rule about “not touching female flesh” really meant. No way is the rule intended not to help those in need, no matter the person or situation.

    I’ve heard a slightly different version before, where the youger monk is angry because the woman showed no gratitude, but it remains a very good story to tell someone who just can’t ‘drop it.’ I like the new twist that weaves in another good lesson, mr_sherman.

    To some the letter of the law is all there is. Rigid an unchanging in any situation. Worthy of a robot, not a human being.

    I agree with you Charles…very Zen.
    The order forbids “touching” but the order is about helping.

    I read this little story years ago. It is one I still remember and keep in my toolkit.
