    He’d be in trouble if he ever did beat the Fink.

    Loosing is better than winning and going to the dungeon. (probably in chains.)

    Maybe that’s how the Spook got there.
    (Though I recall an old strip that suggested the Spook beat him at golf.)

    If Rodney did win, perhaps just one time the fink might spare him instead of striking him down.

    @Linda1259

    No, I think The Fink would go spare about it.

    Don’t know if this idiom works globally … Uncle Google will help.

    Modern bowling equipment even allows for automatic activation of the bumpers for an individual bowler. When it’s that bowler’s turn, the bumpers raise, and when the bowler’s done, the bumpers lower for the next bowler.
    I used to be the assistant manager of Back Alley Lanes, a 6-lane bowling center aboard Naval Air Station – Joint Reserve Base Willow Grove, which used to be not far north of Philadelphia. We had a pretty decent Morale, Welfare & Recreation (MWR) program there.
    Unfortunately, that base was closed in 2011, except that a small portion is still used for the Air National Guard. The bowling center was torn down, despite the fact that it had been completely redone in 2000 with all-new bowling equipment.
