When Wee Pals was first created, bringing black characters to the comics’ pages was by no means an easy task. In 1965, only five major newspapers published the strip. It was not until 1968 -- and the tragic assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. -- that Wee Pals achieved nationwide acceptance. Within three months of King’s death, the strip was appearing in over 100 newspapers nationwide.

Looks like Connie confusing Hansel & Gretel for another story ( or stories) involving evil stepmothers Snow White & Cinderella. Fact is there are several different version of Hansel & Gretel which has either a mother or stepmother ( who in fact are not cruel unlike the “evil” stepmother in Snow White & Cinderella) but “stressed out” while struggling trying to eke out a living while living in poverty.

Asking her husband to take the kids out and kill them, and then bring their hearts back as proof isn’t cruel?

I was a kid growing up in the 1970’s and still remember bringing my lunch to school in a Wee Pals lunchbox. I’m glad to see this strip still going strong!

Hey, farren, I think you are thinking of Snow White.
