You know what? There’s a lot we have to be contrite about. Trying to pretend there isn’t just makes us look dishonest. Though this has nothing to do with the cartoon, I believe we will lead better if we acknowledged our country’s past misdeeds and moved ahead.

cd, I think you and I are both reading that book, ” Lies my Teacher Told Me”, recommended by Dred a while back.
    I agree with you.

fennec, indeed I am. The irony is, I looked at his bio and realized he went to my High School.

ANandy, you certainly have your constitutional right to express your beliefs – and trust me, nobody here would ever want to stop you – but it is our constitutional right to express our opinion that it is utter bunk supported by nothing more than your fertile imagination.

ANandy, I strongly recommend you read the book we’re speaking of. “Lies my teacher told me” by James Loewen (2nd edition). You won’t agree with most of it, I’ll bet, but it wouldn’t hurt you to know where we’re coming from…you know, broadening the ol’ viewpoint.

  7. Anthony 2816

Anthony 2816Genius_badge said, 5 months ago

Hmm…ANandy demands others “cite authority” to back up their opinions…but doesn’t apply that standard to himself.

  8. tpenna

    tpennaGenius_badge said, 5 months ago

Strictly speaking, ANandy, you did not state your assertion that Obama has no values as an opinion. You used unqualified language that characterizes statements of fact.

And, on another note, you still haven’t addressed the matter of you looking silly by continually referring to the President as some variation on “BozO”. Imagine you were in a televised debate. Nobody would take you seriously for using such language. Please try to respect everybody involved in the discussion by calling persons and parties by their proper names.

Call me small-minded, ANandy, but I have a hard time getting past idiosyncrasies like name-calling. It just betrays antipathy and disrespect. You may believe they deserve them, but I have a great amount of respect for the President. And even though I did not like or agree with President George W. Bush, I always tried to refer to him by name or by one of his own preferred nicknames (“W” or “43”).

To do otherwise is not welcome in civilized discourse.

Day 1: We are not going to impose our views on other countries.

Day 2: Secretary of State Clinton declares American policy is to encourage the rights of homosexuals in other countries.

  11. tpenna

    tpennaGenius_badge said, 5 months ago

Encouraging the rights of homosexuals is “our views”, Wachs? There are countries wherein a person may be punished for the “crime” of being homosexual. Rights for homosexuals is not “our views”. It is simply human rights as recognized by Articles 2 and 7 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

  12. Anthony 2816

Anthony 2816Genius_badge said, 5 months ago

Yes, because imposing our values and our system of Democracy has worked SO WELL in the Middle East…

  14. GNWachs

    GNWachsGenius_badge said, 5 months ago

    Hello again Anthony et al:

Once again you want it both ways. Democracy is a universal good and yet when we tried to encourage our view in the middle east the liberals went nuclear. We were told we can’t impose our views elsewhere in the world. So why here is it acceptable?

Woman should be able to vote, should we impose that in those countries that don’t allow it? Genital mutilation is despicable. Should we impose that.

You seem to think it is fine to push your important worldview of right and wrong but Democracy in Iraq? Perish the thought.

Viet Nam, Columbia, Panama, Grenada, Nicaragua, Honduras, Afghanistan, Iraq, Argentina, Chile we’ve tried. Interesting that China and Viet Nam may now be the most “capitalist” countries around. At least that’s what my shoes and electronics indicate.

  16. cdward

    cdward said, 5 months ago

GNW, please note the verbs you used. They mean different things.

Day 1: We are not going to impose our views on other countries.
Day 2: Secretary of State Clinton declares American policy is to encourage the rights of homosexuals in other countries.

Impose means to force. Encourage means to urge without forcing. They are radically different. One, imposing, is NOT right. Encouraging is a valid and useful part of diplomacy.

Well, ANandy, you quoted all but the last sentence of my post. So I’ll restate it: “To do otherwise is not welcome in civilized discourse.”

As such, know that your name-calling renders you not welcomed by me in this discourse. And all I can say is that I feel sorry for you. Not for being rejected by me, but because you seem incapable of changing odious behavior in the face of compelling reasons to do so. There’s a word for such people: reprobate.

You think Obama is evil, so you call him by a clown’s name?

Why do you think him evil?

  25. tpenna

    tpennaGenius_badge said, 5 months ago

Don’t bother asking, Anthony. ANandy really has gone beyond screaming distance of reason.

If we can say that there are evil people in the world, then we should be accurate about it. One might disagree with Obama’s policies. One might perceive that he is a liar. But there can be no adequate reasons to believe that President Obama is evil.

(Oops! Unless he has flown a plane into a building that we’re not aware of.)

  26. longtimecomicsfan

It really isn’t worth the keystrokes to argue with ANandy.

I strongly suspect the nom de guerre is a contraction of “Amos ‘N Andy.”

He (or she) uses a cartoon of the President of the United States Barack Obama with the number “666” on his forehead. If you Google “Obama 666” for images, there are plenty associated with various hate groups all over the internet. This particular cartoon, however, ends with John McCain lamenting “I’m John McCain and I’m ashamed to say my supporters believe this message.”

The cartoon can be viewed here - http://www.seattlepi.com/dayart/20081015/Cartoon20081015.jpg

ANandy, you are the worst kind of poster here. Some people have shown that they are incapable of civilized debate. They are difficult to bear. But you have shown that, being capable of engaging in civilized debate, you simply prefer not to.

No rational human being believes that President Obama is anything approaching “evil”.

  28. fennec

    fennec said, 5 months ago

tpenna, exactly my thought about ANandy. To be incapable is one thing, but to be capable and still act as the incapable do is intellectually totally dishonest and reprehensible.

  29. Wabac

ANandy said: I have great respect for the Office of the President, but my respect for the current occupant is nil. I believe him an evil man.

I am reminded by your behavior of an interview with Tip O’Neil who was asked how he could bring himself to stand and applaud for Ronald Reagan during the State of the Union Address. The reporter continued the question with an observation that O’Neil clearly did not like Reagan.

O’Neil acknowledged the truth of the observation and replied that it was not necessary for him to respect the man but he had the utmost respect for the office the man occupies and will always behave respectfully to whomever occupies it.

The personal attacks diminish the attackers far more than the attacked. Tip O’Neil understood that and acted accordingly. He set an example that far too few have been able to bring themselves to emulate since. What a shame.

  30. Anthony 2816

Anthony 2816Genius_badge said, 5 months ago

No refuting the statement? There’s nothing to refute.

You were asked (1) why you think him evil, and (2) why you think giving him a clown’s name would indicate that opinion, and you couldn’t come up with an answer to either one.

  31. fennec

    fennec said, 5 months ago

You know, ANandy, nobody called you any cheap names here. We did describe how your behavior looks to us and we did condemn it. BTW, your self-righteousness in labeling anyone as “evil” is overwhelming. Who made you judge and jury?

  32. tpenna

    tpennaGenius_badge said, 5 months ago

ANandy blathers on: “Did anyone else note the reaction elicited by the minions at the suggestion that ‘dear leader’ is evil?”

I’ve never once encountered a “minion” of Barack Obama here, ANandy. Instead, every day I see people like cdward, fennec, and believecommonsense (not exhaustive) who give their support or criticism to policies and politicians that they reasonably deem to deserve them.

Oh yeah, and I also see you. You who seem to think that you can in one moment “stand to applaud the occupant of the Office” and in the next childishly call him “BozO” or “evil” without being inconsistent.

  33. tpenna

    tpennaGenius_badge said, 5 months ago

So I’ve called you both childish and inconsistent, ANandy. Care to deny either, or will you merely change topics again?

  34. Wabac

    Wabac said, 5 months ago

ANandy replied: Thanks Wabac, you prove my point. I, as Rep. O’Neil, stand to applaud the occupant of the Office as representing the will of the people as my respect is for the people. I however reserve the right to believe him evil.
    —–
Oh come on! Obviously no one who thinks for him/herself has bought into your BS, just look at the responses to your blather following my comment to you.. You are NOT demonstrating respect for the office of the President when you use demeaning names like BozO and call the man evil.

When you do that you prove yourself a shameless hypocrite.

Based on past experience with ANandy:

Chance that he will abandon this thread: 30%

Chance that he will reply, but ignore the points raised in the last five posts, and instead go off on some tangent: 60%

Chance that he will address the points raised in a way incomprehensible to all but himself: 10%

Chance that he will address the points raised in a logical and complete way: Ooops! All out of percentage points…

“No one has assended the Office of President with so minimal an inquiry into his background or questioning his views as has Obama.”

Okay, so you didn’t get any news during the last couple of years.

“No one has presumed himself adequate for the job of President with such minimum experience as Obama”

Okay, so you didn’t get any news during the last decade.

And you seem to have forgotten that it was the “majority” that elected Obama, so don’t even bother with your “subvert the will of the majority” blather. A few years ago the Republicans had it all. Now they’re around 20% of the population.

“Nandy”…a clue on how to interpret your screen name…you’re Indian?

  37. tpenna

    tpennaGenius_badge said, 5 months ago

ANandy, I congratulate you on being honest with yourself. It would help, though, if you weren’t delusional about the world around you. The ideas you have about Obama are not based in reality, but in wild conspiracy theories that no one in the real world takes seriously.

  38. Anthony 2816

Anthony 2816Genius_badge said, 5 months ago

Seriously? I tried Googling “Nandy”, and it seemed most of the names that popped up were of the Indians-from-India variety.

    So you’re Native American?

  39. Anthony 2816

Anthony 2816Genius_badge said, 5 months ago

No, doesn’t matter…I was just curious because I’d not run into the last name “Nandy” before, and didn’t realize it was Indian.

But if it’s something you’re uncomfortable talking about, no problem.

(BTW, to eschew obfuscation, being born and raised in the US makes you a “native American”, not a “Native American”, which as I’m sure you know, refers to what my anthropology professor called “Amerindians”.)

  40. Anthony 2816

Anthony 2816Genius_badge said, 5 months ago

Congrats on capitalizing the first letter of sentences, but since “So you’re Native American?” doesn’t have Native as the first word, I’m not sure why you’re telling me this.

But this isn’t the place to be revealing personal information anyway.

Interesting link…I hadn’t read about this before (or if I had, I’d forgotten it!)
