    BIG religious celebration…. yep.

    Do atheists participate??

“Though Mardi Gras technically refers only to Fat Tuesday, the Mardi Gras season actually begins on Epiphany, a Christian holiday celebrated on January 6 that is otherwise known as Three Kings Day or the Twelfth Day of Christmas. In Brazil and many other countries, this period between Epiphany and Fat Tuesday is known as Carnival. Whichever name you prefer to use, the revelries of Mardi Gras last until midnight tonight, when Ash Wednesday ushers in 40 days of Lent.”

“According to historians, the celebration of Mardi Gras has its roots in the pagan Roman celebration of Lupercalia. This was a February holiday and it honored the Roman god of fertility. It involved feasting, drinking, and carnal behavior.”

Yep B> I> G> religious holiday because you get a pass and can enjoy yourself right up until LENT where you are expected to sacrifice something for 40 days (like all the prophets – including Jesus).

    Just sayin’….LOL

I imagine many atheists enjoy a parade and party as much as religious folks do. And there may be some who “celebrate” so as not to tick off relatives. Probably there are one or two grumpy atheists who loudly don’t participate and badmouth the whole thing, but no one should pay any mind to them.

I have been on the receiving end of many a rant on the evils of Mardi Gras and like “celebrations”. Mostly from my brothers and sisters that are deeply involved with their various religious institutions.

I am convinced that atheists are people too and enjoy many of the pagan practices associated with most of our religious holiday celebrations.

Maybe if we just followd the “prime directive” ourselves and quit monitoring the activities of our neighbors with the goal of “saving” them we would be more happy.

    Love is all you need.
