The Russian and Iranian revolutions both had wide support, but, after the ancien regime fell, a small group of radicals managed a complete take over out of the chaos and instituted a reign of terror.

However, in Egypt, after the Islamic radicals took over, the military managed an impeachment coup, even though the Islamists had proclaimed in their Constitution that any removal of an Islamist president was unConstitutional.

Of the 1/3 of Egyptians who voted for the military’s new and improved Constitution, 98% were in favour. Now the pro-Islamists can speculate that 2/3 of Egyptians rejected the military’s Constitution and want to see the Islamic Brotherhood back, and the anti-Islamists can say that the overwhelming majority of Egyptians favour the military Constitution. And there’s no way to know how most Egyptians really feel about things.

I’ve heard from some Islamist Egyptians that every decent Egyptian wants Morsi back. There may be no bread, but at least, after living in a land that enforces strict Islam, you’ll go to Paradise after you starve.

And I’ve heard the opposite from Egyptians (some Muslim, some not) who don’t believe that starving for Islam is the best way to die.

The military has ruled Egypt from behind-the-scenes for many decades, with the president being a titular ruler. Same thing now.
