The Italian elections are such a sad example of what is happening in democracies. Silvio Berlusconi is running despite facing many indictments for a score of misdeeds
^.
The Kenyan elections are today. Most reporters say that if the middle class would vote as a bloc, a good decision could be reached. However, we see in Kenya, an example of what is happening to us in the USA. Kenyans think nationally, but vote tribally. The candidate for one of the larger tribes is under indictment with the world court for calling on his supporters to kill supporters of his opponent in a previous election- a call that was recorded on video. If he is elected, he may still be subpoenaed by the Hague to face those charges.
^
Here in the USA, our tribes are the Republicans and the Democrats. As predicted by Geo. Washington in his farewell address, they have divided the nation and with every failure to work together, they weaken the core quality of what made this nation great….our idealism and, as zfacts writes – “Sensible politics requires that two old-fashioned conservative principles be applied to an empathetic interpretation of the three long-recognized goals of government: protect the public, promote the general Welfare, and stabilize the economy. The two conservative principles are (1) don’t waste public funds, and (2) don’t discourage personal responsibility.”
^
It is that empathetic quality that made us a United People. Our ability to put ourselves in our neighbors’ shoes and want for them what we want for ourselves and those we love.
We need Sensible politicians, and sensitive, respectful neighbors.
Respectfully,
C.

I know little of Italian politics but I spent two weeks there one time what I learned was that yes they love their country very much but they loved it for what it has been not for what it is or could be. Americans should love America for its past (both good and bad) for what it is and for what it can be.

Being a Parliamentary Democracy, Italy has gone through many governments. Coalitions etc. Berlisconi is a playboy old rich man mogul. Known for his wild sex parties with under age girls.

a comedian, a pervert who loves underage girls and tax cheat, a technocrat, and a leftist. the leftists won the lower house, but not the upper house. hung parliament. the technocrat came in 4th. the comedian came in 3rd, and the pervert tax cheat came in second. sometimes i wonder if italy should be split in 3, the north, the south, and the vatican.

Berlisconi isn’t a Leftist that I am aware.

Interesting you chose to compare Kenya & Italy, and of course I see the resemblance in that both have candidates that hope that by being elected, the Kenyans may avoid standing before the ICC although they may still not be immune to prosecution even if elected and Berlusconi will probably wait for more charges to expire and/or alter legislation to suit him as he has done before.
