    You know HQ, the thing about “I’m Sorry” is that it really does work if one really means it, and it doesn’t work if they don’t.

    One might say that it is the foundation of Christian belief.

    Lots of people think that they can go through life sinning it up, but at the end, as long as they confess, God’ll forgive them and they’ll get to go to Heaven. A quick chat with Jesus and, well, after all, he died for my sins, right… Why let that go to waste?

    But if the confession isn’t a sign of true contrition, I’m pretty sure that the God who created the Universe will be able not to be fooled.

    “I’m sorry.” would go a long way towards finding a lasting peace in the Middle East. After all, what did Jesus mean when he said, “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.” and do you think he was just talking to the prostitute when he said “Go forth and sin no more.”?

    No, he meant also to change the hearts of the crowd by having them admit to themselves and to each other that they have been wrong in the past! That true turn of the heart is the result of a true apology.

    But, truth be told, most people are about as good at apologizing as they are at truely giving THANKS!

    Excuse me but saying I have sinned in front of God is a far cry from saying “I am sorry” to a religion based on domination. One might put you in the right with the big guy, the other will just get your butt whooped.

    Not that it matters to the discussion at hand. Whether Jesus even was or not doesn’t really matter to me. Whether there is/was a God who wrote the Ten Commandments is immaterial. T

    The TC are a framework of societal laws, they are rules that people can agree are good advice for peoples living in close proximity. The “I am the Lord” stuff is central to the idea that there is an authority (in our case, that authority is Law, which is enforced by the “power derived from a mandate of the masses”) And the “Keep holy the sabbath” reminds us to take a day off from work, it’s good for the sanity.

    Jesus’s story is simply an extension of the basic rules (which overthrew Mosaic Law, which had become onerus, ornery, and overly protective of the wealthy) by saying “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”

    Now, of course people like HQ existed then too and they would say things like “We’ll get our azzes whooped!” to which JC tried again and again to point out how turning the other cheek and forgiving trespasses are the best way to get the humanity to come forth in our enemies.

    Here we are 2,000 years later and the azz still has his jawbones (one might say there are even more of them today!). The lessons still haven’t been learned by many who expect that Jesus will reward them for theobstinancy with which they held on to their flawed belief.

    Human nature is the same. We’re all BASICALLY the same. There may be some of us who are more evil than others, but the vast majority of us just don’t have it in us to that extent. The vast majority of us would rather laugh than fight. Populations are made up of “fractals” we call “individuals” and the whole is actually very similar to the “Fractal”. Treat the nations as you would like to be treated and the nations will follow.

    Something very suttle and wrong about this strip. 1st panel Israel is scowling, bush is smiling at him. Bush is frantic at Iran. But in the next Israel is smiling while Obama frowns at him? Then Obama looks “threating” and there has been no change in Iran?
    To my knowledge Bush supported Israel and Israel liked Bush. Iran was working on Nuclear but surly they have stepped up their efforts after the apology tour of Obama. The only thing with Israel that I can work out is that they are happier with Obama is the fact they can tell him to push off we will take care of the problem our self.

    I will not go into details, you might know them doc, but the odds of us being here in this star system and on this planet are like hitting the lotto 100 times in a row. The universe itself could have fluctuated at the big bang one way or the other and it could not have held itself together. The beginning and ending of that is God.
    But I digress you want to go into proving something does not exist, but for whom? You? I can not comprehend the Alpha and Omega of it all but if one day you can, then you can have your own god complex. Then you can claim it is all baloney, smoke and mirrors of biology. But as far as I know no human can prove that the spark of life is nothing but “reactions” We can only turn off the switch but we have never been able to turn it back on. Your “need” to reach out and justify your beliefs is just a reflection of you trying to understand something you do not. It is some say that very “need” to understand that is at the soul of man.

    Except DrC. we all know that there is a soul. We may not know what it is and we may be wrong in our knowledge that there is one, but every sentient being has the software of a soul.

    Every sentient living being will struggle to survive (occasionally one will give up its life in order to save the “greater good” of the group, and rarely one will do away with itself) and as such knows that there is a difference between being alive and being dead.

    For you to insist that this “soul” does not exist therefore is a positive assertion just as if you pointed to the clear glass of a window and insisted that it wasn’t there. Everyone sees the evidence of its existence (it blocks the wind) and so it is your job to prove that the window is not there, not their’s to prove that it is.

    While I will enjoy this conversation (I find religious discussions can be much less contentious than other subjects if both persons know up front that its all theory and BS) I would like to point out again that the existence of a soul, of a God, of a Jesus, of an Allah, of a Vishnu, of a Gaia or any other construct is irrelavent to my position that it is a better policy to admit one’s mistakes, treat others as one would like to be treated and expect that the others will do the same (or we’ll treat them as they treated us) than to insist that others forgive and forget towards our trespasses while we trespass again.
