The police turned violent on them so they retaliated in kind.

Indeed, although this report says the opposite, that the Military Police reacted to a violent minority. They’re entirely justified in vandalising government offices even when fellow demonstrators attempt to stop the vandalism in some instances. Violence begets violence. This BBC report states that the government will look into the abuses the military police may have committed (well, sureeee they will)

An aside, my youngest brother was over in Brazil on business the past month and returned a couple of days ago. When the rioting got violent, he holed up in his hotel in São Paulo. When talking with him, he went out onto the balcony and I could hear the crack-crack-crack of the tear gas canisters being shot and shouts of the protesters. (the hotel didnºt overlook the riots, they were a few streets away). My brother had no opinion on the rioting, he had had a successful business trip and was missing his family. Heºs back in Brazil next month. I suggested he pack a gas mask next time. He wasnºt amused. Bah, heºs so apolitical.
