The Euro is looking like the Vietnam War in the ‘60s: it can’t be allowed to fail, and it can’t be allowed to succeed. (The US knew it could not win in Vietnam, or the Chinese would send in troops like they did in Korea; but the US couldn’t lose, since that would be appeasement and dominoes.)
If the Euro fails, Europe returns to the condition that started two rather nasty minor regional conflicts in ’14 and ’39. But to keep the Euro means finding a way to salvage the PIIGS economies. Both alternatives are totally unacceptable, so Europe needs something that is neither killing the Euro nor keeping the Euro.

Not sure I understand where you’re going with this. I believe that this refers to Mexico’s president-elect asking Spain to form new partnerships to improve both their economies.

History’s joke about the Vietnam War was that it didn’t matter in the long run; the Americans won the Cold War, anyway.
