Tony Blair would be a horrible EU president. As a Dutchman, I favour Juncker. He is from a small state and so will keep the other small states in mind. Secondly, he has the dual role of being the PM and the Finance Minister in Luxembourg, and so has an excellent background for the job. I would back Balkenenden, but we need him to keep the far right at bay in Holland, so my money is on Juncker. Blair would be a nice foreign policy snag because he is easily recognizable, but other than that he is a moron. He backed the deregulation, the wars and essentially opened the door for the Americanization of European politics. More importantly he is from England, where they havent even come fully aboard with the European Union. It would be a slap in the face for Europe if the likes of Blair would soil the EU by becoming its first president.

From what I read too (and it’s a different selection from Oldie’s), Tony is indeed toast.

…and fallen to the floor buttered side down.
Blair was probably the most pro-European British politician in recent times. Pity he chose to not upset certain newspapers and adopted slightly euro-sceptic policies and also backed George W Bush’s idiotic plans in Iraq.
The EU president will probably be a candidate that will be the least disliked by all although I must agree with a.c.d, Juncker is probably the man, a more pro-European kind of guy like him will be difficuilt to find.
