    Gosh, not “moronic” Africans?

@ Night-Gaunt There is a new ramping up of a new African “land-grab” by just about everyone: China, India, Europe (former & non colonial powers), Middle-Eastern countries and the US; mostly through “investment” companies, agri-conglomerates. Not only because of but including a bio-fuels side-effect. Plus a global run on mineral rights in mineral rich but impoverished war-torn countries.

Not sure where this comment has relevance to the ‘toon. Tayo is referring to the great loss of life recently in two trafficker -run ships sinking. With hundreds of lives lost.
In the 1st week of October, 2 major incidents: In the 1st, at least 364 deaths, in the 2nd, at least 38 deaths. It is estimated that in the last 20 years or so, over 20 000 deaths have been recorded of would-be migrants trying to cross the Med; about 1500 this year alone.

Debates about the “Fortress Europe” and its effects are becoming more common now. I fear more bad will come of it. While there is some shame about what occurred and a review of policies is talked about, I think the exact opposite is going to happen. More barriers.

The only way to mitigate migrants heading to richer countries is to ensure the poorer countries enrich themselves. Migrants typically would rather not migrate (I ought to know: I’m a migrant). Migrants won’t migrate if staying put means they can feed their families. This means ending unfair international trade practices, including investments which encourages the new “land grab” which is dispossessing hundreds of thousands; promoting education, combating ignorance & corruption. Raising barriers is next to useless.

The cartoon is about the recent sinking of 2 boats carrying migrants enroute to Lampedusa, Italy, via Libya, with over 400 deaths.
