This appeared in “Garfield and Friends” as a “quickie” (which could be edited out to make room for another commercial).

‘What is that?’
‘Good lord a forgotten jungle full of primordial beasts …’
‘No, next to that!’

Being as US Acres debuted in papers March 6, 1986 and Garfield and Friends began it’s seven season run September 17, 1988, I’m pretty sure this 1987 strip inspired the cartoon you’re talking about. But I seem to recall it wasn’t a quickie but a full US Acres segment as the quickies were at the end of the show. A Garfield segment the the US Acres segment, then the second Garfield segment, then a Garfield quickie to end the show before rolling the credits.
