Sherlock Holmes is apparently the most frequently portrayed fictional character in movies and TV.
Tarzan and Ebeneezer Scrooge can’t be too far behind.

Of course, the number of Scrooges must be roughly equal to the number of Marleys, Bob Cratchits, Tiny Tims….

Nigel Bruce’s portrayal of Dr. John Watson as a bumbling fool was the WORST in cinematic history. I suppose it was to show off Basil Rathbone as the brilliant Holmes, but other productions have managed to portray Watson as the intelligent Doctor, Coroner and ex-military man that Conan-Doyle created. As an example, take a look at Edward Hardwicke’s Watson against Jeremy Brett’s Holmes in Granada Television’s productions. Or even James Mason’s Watson against Christopher Plummer’s Holmes in “Murder by Decree”.

Good point. All things being equal, then Dr. Watson has been portrayed as many times as Holmes!
