Jules Feiffer has described Tony Auth best, "His perspective is that of a bemused and often angry comic historian. Irony, never a favorite form with Americans, is his meat and potatoes. He is not smug, and though he can be mean, he is never mean-spirited. Auth is a moralist and an optimist. He insists, even in this day and age, that hope is more than the name of a right-wing comedian or the shtick of a reactionary president."

How many are Chevy Volt owners?

IT’s A LAPTOP, with a battery!
However, in THAT area, being without a computer after the battery runs down is “disaster”, and headless horses rear-ends.

Cal, baby, calm down. The problem is above ground power lines, not that some folks have electric cars.

The problem is an incompetent monopoly that has announced it plans to raise its rates at twice the rate of inflation in the near future. Aren’t private monopolies great, laissez-faire capitalism fans?

The sadness is, the caricature is a huge component of our current population, unable to function in ANY disaster/inconvenience, because total dependence on technology has sapped the intellect and “independence” they claim.

Try packing up and moving an entire household during this mess, I did and somehow I survived.

The Volt has a gas engine as well. That’s the main feature of the ads GM runs. Have you been living under a rock? How embarrassing for you….

This may sound paranoid to you, but i got a big car battery on a trickle-charger 24/7, and an inverter that will allow me to use my laptop, smart-phone etc. for several days. I also got water for two weeks (plus a purifier), food for 1-2 month and fuel for the cooker/heater for 3 month. And I’m NOT a “Doomsday-Prepper”, just a guy who knows how fragile our infrastructure (worldwide) is and how we depend on it.
Not having a generator when your power comes from some wooden poles along your street (lined with trees…) is a big risk. In Germany everything below 20.000 Volts is buried underground, I didn’t have a power outage in 15 years or so, and then only for minutes until the breakers are reset. But you never know, hence the battery…

Underground lines will not prevent above ground transformers going out or exploding

I know what this is like; I’ve been through a Hurricane or two.
The worst part is when it happens in August, which have the hottest days of Summer in Florida.
