Jules Feiffer has described Tony Auth best, "His perspective is that of a bemused and often angry comic historian. Irony, never a favorite form with Americans, is his meat and potatoes. He is not smug, and though he can be mean, he is never mean-spirited. Auth is a moralist and an optimist. He insists, even in this day and age, that hope is more than the name of a right-wing comedian or the shtick of a reactionary president."

Hmmm … not happy cleaning up the past policy’s of the department , or not happy having to ” cover ” them up ?
Either way , he doesn’t seem too pleased with the task at hand .
cdward said, 2 months ago
I think the idea is that he’s cleaning up the mess, but if it’s just whitewash, I don’t know how lasting the effects will be. Reminds me of the East Germans who used to reach over the Berlin Wall with a giant machine and paint over the anti-DDR graffiti on the western side. By the end of the next week, it was always covered again.

Whitewash–yes it goes with Obamacare

Here is a song dedicated to Obama and the democrats.
Obama came across the sea
He brought us pain and misery
He killed our babies, he killed our creed
He took our taxes for his own need
We fought him hard we fought him well
Out on the plains we gave him hell
But many came too much for cree
Oh will we ever be set free?
Riding through dustclouds and barren wastes
Galloping hard on the plains
Chasing the conservatives back to their holes
Fighting them at their own game
Murder for freedom a stab in the back
Women and children and cowards attack
Run to the hills run for your lives
Run to the hills run for your lives
Soldier blue on the barren wastes
Hunting and killing their babies
Raping the women and wasting the men
The only good conservatives are tame
Selling them lies and taking their gold
Enslaving the young and killing the old
Run to the hills run for your lives

And when striper sings I’m sure it’s to the tune of Turkey in the Straw.

There is a stage in human development where the “I” or “WE” is the center of the universe. “I/WE” cannot understand the difference between actions and being, so if “I/WE” has made a mistake, “I/WE” is bad. People at this stage of development are threatened by the idea of investigating, holding accountable, finding fault with their leader person or with their WE-belong group, because it threatens who they believe themselves to be.
It requires a more mature and healthy cognitive and emotional development to understand that a person or nation who can face and accept that they have erred is likely to be stronger and to grow stronger.

Not seeking prosecution of past wrongdoing to move the country forward is wrong? Even “blaming” the present problems on the fact the past MADE the present is “mean-spirited”? Seeing a way to make a better America, where fewer people die in war, or a war to get medical treatment, is obviously evil and misguided?
The left, nearly three years ago, did drop the ball with “impeachment is off the table”. The right considers getting everything they want, accommodation by the left. Cooperation by the “loyal opposition” means false propaganda, screaming fits, and holding their breath ‘til they turn blue(dog).
Yes, whitewash can cover up past sins, errors, flaws, distortions, lies, and total failures, but it may give a new surface upon which to project a new image, a new future. All it takes is a willingness to work together to form that new image, or remove the obstruction and start over.
America, tear down OUR WALL!

So Striper in 3-7 years from now when Obama is out of office are you going to admit that none of your BS was right? Are you going to admit that he never really was a socialist/communist/nazi/fascist?

Obama is not a communist or a socialist. He is a communitarian. Closely akin to the good statism.
That is the philosophy as desired by many on both coasts but not in fly over country.

A communitarian believes the state /community should be the preeminent factor for governing. In contradistinction from Libertarian which prizes the individual. Opposite ends of the coin.
Bottom line is rules should be made for what is best for the community as a whole. I am my brothers keeper. see Amitai Etzioni and
I, as a libertarian believe in individual authority. I won’t tell you what to do and you don’t tell me. I don’t believe communitarian society ever can work because it doesn’t consider basic human nature.

GNW, at least I’m glad that means you aren’t worried about abortion or homosexuality.

Besides that; it’s unnecessary. We know what works and we have it already. We just have to save it from the “termites”; as another poster mentioned…

The Libertarian philosophy is you can do whatever you wish as long as you don’t harm anyone else. Your rights end where my nose begins. Keep the government out of pot, abortion, prostitution, pornography, sexual orientation, gun possession, health care etc etc.

A simple statement of libertarian philosophy generally sounds good, it begins to be less attractive in its execution.
Those who pollute in streams, rivers, and our air put their fist in millions of people’s noses, so to speak. Thus, regulation is needed. But the libertarians I’ve heard don’t like regulations and want fewer of them. Government strangling free enterprise and all that. I’ve asked a brother who prefers the libertarian philosophy about things like this …. and sometimes what he describes is what we now have, though the implementations of regulations may be faulty.

A touch of advice to whoever tagged this cartoon - learn to spell “racist” before you start throwing it around in print.

GNW, your theory of “human nature” may be a bit off about what is, biologically, human nature. I refer you to the paper in Science this week which I have previously mentioned (Rand et al, Science 325:1272) and also to a summary of Frans de Waals’ new book in “Natural History” this month (9/2009) on the importance of empathy in primate (and other social animals) behavior.

Etzioni is old news although i appreciate his thought. thanks fennec for the turn on to a fresh one.

You’re all guilty of “rascalism”!
fbrewer said, 2 months ago
Libertarianism is an ideal of individual freedom accompanied by individual responsibility. In practice, it establishes a society that is uniquely vulnerable to those without conscience or scruples. I worked around industrial machinery all my career, starting before OSHA was established. I saw the absolute lack of concern by my employers for MY safety. “You got hurt by faulty machinery? I TOLD you to be careful. This is your fault.” OSHA didn’t change that attitude in the slightest. But the inspections and the fines sure changed the behavior. You know what? I think government meddling is just darned fine! In part because I still have all my fingers and other treasured appendages. And if you’d like to complain about the EPA, I live 10 miles from the largest superfund site in the country. And if you’d like to complain about the Forest Service, I live adjacent to 3 million acres of national forest. I haven’t run across any libertarian principles that stack up.
motivemagus said, 2 months ago
Actually, GNW, I don’t believe libertarianism society can ever work, either, for the same reason you don’t believe in communitarianism – at least, not an maintain a technological civilization on the scale of the US. A realistic society can only exist between the extremes.

cdward said, 2 months ago
GNW, I too can appreciate the libertarian ideal. Unfortunately, I also agree with fbrewer and motivemagus that the ideal doesn’t really work in practice. Wish it did.

MM, CD, etc. I think we are in agreement. My job is to pull the communitarians back from the edge and give more balance. Probably it would make for a better society if nobody drank, smoked pot, read porn, had a gay marriage, lived in sin, had an abortion etc but that is not for Washington to command us.
The above sentiment usually finds favor with my liberal friends but the other side of the coin doesn’t. Read the 10th A and half the acts of the Federal Government are unconstitutional. I know the general welfare clause but using that clause goodbye the long list of vices listed above.
