Jules Feiffer has described Tony Auth best, "His perspective is that of a bemused and often angry comic historian. Irony, never a favorite form with Americans, is his meat and potatoes. He is not smug, and though he can be mean, he is never mean-spirited. Auth is a moralist and an optimist. He insists, even in this day and age, that hope is more than the name of a right-wing comedian or the shtick of a reactionary president."

Until a free and non-corporatist controlled press in reborn in the U.S.A., our elections will continue to be corrupt. Every network has made news reporting part of their entertainment divisions. News Corp. has won a Supreme Court ruling that the first amwendment does not require that “TRUTH” must be included in its reporting.
So Disney, General Electric and Viacon have the right not to report on election fraud. We can, and do, control voter fraud; however, only a free and independent press can protect us from election fraud!

Who should we back then? BTW: Don’t cop out and say leave.
cdward said, 2 months ago
Gladius, don’t proclaim to know what we should do, but why is it a copout to think we should just leave?

cd,
I think replying with leave would be a cop-out in this forum. I think supporting Karzai isn’t a real popular option with the State Dept even if they think they have to. However, I’m not real sure that leaving is a decent option. I am seriously interested in any alternatives to those two. I was interested in a reasonable reply not a one- worder. That is what I meant by cop- out.
Unfortunately,
I doubt that I’ll have the time to continue this. My brief time off ends tomorrow.

That’s the Christian way, WTFall, bomb them back to the Stone Age, butcher their women, children, and old people, starve them, pollute their environments, and then build a few roads and schools? I am learning SO MUCH about American Christianity on these boards.
Buzzy-One said, 2 months ago
DrC, if you do it in God’s name then it’s AOK.
cdward said, 2 months ago
Dr. C. and Buzzy, I hope you know enough Christians in this forum (myself included) who do not represent what you’ve described.
It’s my experience that among every grouping of people gathered (physically or metaphorically) for any purpose, there are scoundrels as well as good-hearted people who give of themselves to make the lives of others better.
I am with wtfall about spending our money on rebuilding (and yes, I know we destroyed most of it) rather than more occupation. Can’t remember who said it, but it seems to make sense that a strong central government may not be the way for Afghanistan because it’s more tribal, more regional. We may do better leaving it to the warlords.
Biggest problem of course is, we don’t even know what we want there.
DrCanuck said, 2 months ago
Of course we do, cd. But the larger point is that the appellation “Christian” no longer means anything; there are as many forms of Christianity as there are Christians.
One must look at each person’s values and behaviours. By their fruits, ye shall know them. (Now where did I read that?)

who said “Christianity is good if it weren’t for the Christians” - Ghandi?
cdward said, 2 months ago
Ghandi: “I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”
Dr.C: You are correct that “Christian” really has little meaning anymore. I wonder if it ever really did because from the beginning followers of Christ were trying to reject each other – and often enough kill each other. Yet, I still number myself among those followers and try to be as close to being like Christ as a follower can.
DrCanuck said, 2 months ago
Agreed, cd. But it strikes me that since many fringe groups have expropriated the name “Christian” and changed the meaning into a representation of small-minded, hatefilled bigotry, that any real Christian would not want to use the name because of the associations it raises. (A long way from the “light of the world” idea.) So it’s time for real Christians to create a new name for themselves that represents who they are and differentiates them from the haters.
Any suggestions?

So let me understand DrC. you are ” learning SO MUCH about American Christianity on these boards” and then you say “the appellation “Christian” no longer means anything; there are as many forms of Christianity as there are Christians.”
But you are learning SO MUCH about something you lump together as “American Christianity.”
Can you see why it’s so hard to take you seriously?
Can you see how much easier it is to see you as an unjustified elitst prig from the north looking down your nose at “Americans?”
I can. And I really think you ought to take a moment and reflect on your attitude.
DrCanuck said, 2 months ago
Thank you for your Christian judgment.
Buzzy-One said, 2 months ago
cdward, I have an idea but there are just too many crack-pots drowning out any sensible thought. Sometimes a sarcastic marker would help when baiting. PS - I have a good confident, my priest. I hope others have their own confident.
ReasonsVentriloquist said, 2 months ago
I could swear that I never claimed to be “Christian” here.
I claimed that I am Agnostic, leaning towards A Gnostic.
This is why it is so hard to take you seriously!
You don’t let facts get in the way of a juvenile snark.

I saw this bumper sticker the other week:
“Afganistan is Arabic for Viet Nam
DrCanuck said, 2 months ago
Afghanistan is not Arabic. And this is why America will lose this war; no one has any idea who they are fighting or why.

^^ & ^ Fennec somewhere else and a few days ago lamented the lack of insight. No sh!t.
There is similar confusion with the mainly Farsi-speaking Persians in Iran. About 3% might be Arabic. None in Afghanistan.
ReasonsVentriloquist said, 2 months ago
It’s a bumper sticker dipsnot.
This is why its so hard to take a guy like you seriously Dr.Ca, you can’t even keep straight which side you’re “on.”
You’re agin it!
How exactly can anybody say “We won” or “We lost” in Afghanistan? And if “we lost” didn’t we already lose? And if we already “lost” then isn’t it most probably because we diverted attention from Afghanistan and towards Iraq?
OTOH if we haven’t yet “lost” how will we know when we have?
Oh tell us, please DrCanuck! Don’t spare us any of your specific generalizations because surely if one guy in Delaware has a bumper sticker that is incorrect, then surely no one knows any better than that. All Americans must surely be stupid and hypocritically Christian (even though you say that Christian has come to mean nothing, as if that’s some new revelation) because of the sample you’ve taken from this gigantic slice of the American public that must have between 50 and 100 people posting to it!
How the heck you can be a “PhD, university professor of epistemology, philosophy of science, and cognitive-behavioral psychology.” with such sloppy thought processes as you display here is beyond me. Somewhere there is BS to be called.
