Jules Feiffer has described Tony Auth best, "His perspective is that of a bemused and often angry comic historian. Irony, never a favorite form with Americans, is his meat and potatoes. He is not smug, and though he can be mean, he is never mean-spirited. Auth is a moralist and an optimist. He insists, even in this day and age, that hope is more than the name of a right-wing comedian or the shtick of a reactionary president."

August, 51 soldiers killed, the most to die yet, in one month since the war began.

I was for the war in Afghanistan, because that’s where Osama was. He’s not there now. What are we doing there now, again?

My son is heading over there and I’m scared for him….
cdward said, 2 months ago
Copperdomebodhi, I think the proper question is, what are we STILL doing there? We never left, just intensified.

An interesting 3 page report on a British website:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/09/02/dicshootsself_in_foot/
Some of the writer’s points can be made for troops supplied by all countries that joined the American invasion.
We need to focus on capturing Osama Bin Laden, one of the members of the Bin Laden family, close family friends with the American Bush family often found in politics.

War for oil bad.. War for poppies good. Of course we are no longer at war, Obama administation renamed it to an over sea contingency. And we no longer have terrorist attacks they are man made bad things.
Thanks Obama I feel safer already……Not
I know while we are at it lets cut as much as we can out of the military budget. That will help.

None of what you wrote is accurate (or coherent).

The trick with Afghanistan is in getting out gracefully, although it’s probably too late for that.
We need to re-evaluate the objectives for this war, if indeed we even really have any, besides trying to impose some kind of western-style order in a place that rather looks like it doesn’t want it.
One problem is that somehow we westerners have this pre-conception that we’re here to solve the world’s problems, and we can do it in a quick, flashy gesture.
We prefer to contain the period of crisis to about 15 minutes (including the car chase, gun battle, and lots of pyrotechnics), with a five-minute dénouement , 10 minutes of character development and back-story, 15 minutes of commercials, and a little 30 second shot at the end showing the bad guy in containment, glaring at the camera and vowing revenge, which will be the season opener for next year.
How do we solve the problem? Maybe we do, maybe we don’t. Maybe we just have to learn to live with this rival ideology who wants us dead.
Maybe one thing we REALLY have to do is LEARN. Study the region, its history, its culture. Find out what makes these people tick. Find out why the Taliban and alQaeda have such influence over these people, and figure out how to neutralize this influence.
Therefore, it is a hopeless case for us, because if there is one thing we canNOT stand, it’s learning and studying “weird” cultures and people who are different from us.
Don’t believe me? Then why did the military let go of those (competent) Arabic linguists (which we NEED right now) who happened to be gay?

etocme, many of us still want us out, and we are telling our congressional leaders. However, getting out after eight years is much harder than not invading in the first place. Now we have to deal with how much damage we might cause by up and leaving.
It’s my belief (though I am open to being convinced otherwise) that we probably cannot just walk away without doing even more harm to countless people. But I don’t know. I would not envy any president the position Obama found himself in from the beginning.

We are headed for the same fate Russia suffered. Total Collapse of our Government because we are throwing our $$$ into a War we cannot win.
Of course had a Republican President named Ronald Wilson reagan not supported Osama Bin Laden for 8 years, Russia would have killed him for Us.
Russia still would have collapsed due to the fact they were throwing all of their money in a battle with Osama.
Ronald Reagan supported 2 Terrorists for 8 Years. Saddam was killing Iraqis when RR supported him. He also supported Saddam and his rag tag Taliban Army. He called Osama and his Rag Tag Taliban Army; ‘Freedom Fighters’ Daddy Bush continued supporting Osama and Saddam for 8 years Oh, ‘W’ supported another Terrorist Country, Iran for 6 years.
Oh, ‘W’ Bush supported The Terrorist Country of Libya when he removed them from the Terrorist Watch List.
Why are the Conservatives so deafly Silent on the fact 3 of their beloved Republican Presidents Supported Terrorism?

@harleyquin ‘W’ was the one who buried his head in the sand in August 2001 when he received a PDB warning him Muslims intended on using our own Commercial Airplanes to fly into our select Skyscraper Buildings across the USA. ‘W’ ignored the PDB. He did nothing to apply Stricter Guidelines to Airport Security. They have Proof Positive of this. One of the Airports where one of the ill fated flights originated shows a Security Screener taking Box Cutters for 4 Muslim Passengers. That was the Right Thing to do. The Wrong thing this same screener id was to run down the hallway leading to the Gates, catching up to the Muslim Passengers and handing the Box Cutters back to them.
All ’W’ had to do was to issue a direct order to all Airports demanding all screeners confiscate the following items from all passengers’ person and Carry On luggage:
Knives, Nail Clippers, Nail Files, Emery Boards, Scissors, Matches, Lighters, and Leatherman Tools

What do we feel so compeled to teach those people? How to set up a system in which lobbyists govern? Maybe we should imitate them instead. Come to think about it, in this country voting is totally irrelevant. Right?

Tigger, OBL was a minor player in the defeat of the Soviets. He became radicalized after 41’s Gulf war and stationing of foreign troops in Saudi Arabia. Did not move to Afghanistan until AFTER Sudan nearly gave him up(no thanks to Bubba).
You are a miserably unread poor soul. Go back and READ, Books, magazines and newspapers and lay off the blogosphere

Hey tigger, Old blly boy is the one that left our intelegence in such a state that cuased the PDB warning to be taken the way it was. The ball was dropped from farther back. I think it happened somewhere after a cigar and before a dress. Old Bill was more then happy to bomb something over seas to wash that out of the head lines. While that was going on the only time we took a threat seriously was Dec. 31 1999. W was trying to find funding for our intelligence agencies that had been slashed to the bone during Bills years.
Bottom line duh there was a PDA warning among a million others but we did not have the man power to know what was important and what was not all thanks to billy boy.

Let me see now, Bill Clinton is responsible for 9-11, WMD’s in Iraq, the Afghanistan war, the 2008 depression. What else has he been up to ? I mean, what has he done for us lately ?http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3036677/#32515009
Now, you were saying about screwing up intelligence ?

And the Beast recoils in Fear of the Truth !
I agree, someone should be held responsible, Cheney and Bush, they were told time and time again, from the day they walked in the door to just a week before, but they ignored the info. and waited, so they could put their plan in place, P-NAC.
Jamie Gorelick ? Sandy pants ?
You should go back to taking only one pill 3 x times a day, not 3 pills 10 x times a day.
I just found a Communist channel, They call it FOX NEWS !
Why should republican have 80% to 100% of the radio waves ? Cause their Communist ! There should be at least the same percentage given to Democrats as there are Democrats! Communists Indeed !

«August, 51 soldiers killed …» Seniorbullwinkle, how many Afghanis were killed during the same period ? Mr Auth may not regard this minor matter as relevant to the «quagmire», but I suspect that a majority of the residents of Afghanistan - in the event they are permitted to have an opinion with regard to a foreign invasion of their country - do….

Yes Mr. Day, your point is more than valid. The information I heard was only from a U.S. military Point Of View (POV), One can only assume all other casualty were also the highest of the war yet.
I’m sorry if I gave you the impression that I dont care about Afghani people, I DO, It’s that no one here (IN THE USA NEWS ) has or gives out those numbers. If you know, please post the link.
