Jules Feiffer has described Tony Auth best, "His perspective is that of a bemused and often angry comic historian. Irony, never a favorite form with Americans, is his meat and potatoes. He is not smug, and though he can be mean, he is never mean-spirited. Auth is a moralist and an optimist. He insists, even in this day and age, that hope is more than the name of a right-wing comedian or the shtick of a reactionary president."

Hitting the tree is his mistake. Who’s mistake is it when he hits me?

Let’s ban everything in vehicles…cell phones, eating, talking, listening to radio, GPS, opening widows…that ought to protect them

etocme … you need to get on an even keel.

Geez etocme…how do you type with a chip the size of a roofing beam on your shoulder?

Other things to ban in vehicles: assault rifles, abortions, gay marriage, smoking, trans-fats, teaching evolution, and Hitler!

This cartoon has all the subtlety of a Chick tract. Maybe the guy was cut off by an idiot driver who wasn’t talking on the phone. Happens to me every day. Let’s ban incompetent driving.

Driving while distracted will do this. This is like a bludgeon reminding us of that fact.
lonevoice said, 8 months ago
I have to agree with etocme. Responsible driving is every driver’s responsibility. If we ban cell phones, that won’t stop irresponsible drivers from other distractions in the vehicle, such as eating, talking, smoking, etc.

lonevoice … there are some idiots that just can’t be helped but perhaps we can reduce some of the risk factors to others.

oldie, you’ve got it exactly right. Remember the 60’s when seat bealts became manditory? Sounds like some of the posters here must be hold-overs.

I installed seat belts in my car quite a while before “required”, because I was around racing, and because my brother and his best friend were both killed in an “ejection” accident where they wouldn’t have even had minor injury had they had seat belts in the car and worn them. Cell phones in a driver’s hand are just deadly weapons.

Etocme : Texting and Cellphoning while driving are today’s Russian Roulette - and eating behind the wheel comes just behind them. When you are at the wheel of an automobile you are operating a one or more ton deadly weapon! I once watched, while stopped for a red light, a woman rear-ending a police car while fixing her makeup. I can only say that LOL was my only reaction when she got out and told the officer that she hadn’t seen the light change - although the smear of lipstick across her cheek told everyone what she had been doing, including the other police car immediately behind her whose driver, as a quick-thinker, used his hand-held video camera to record the scene for posterity!
No offense ladies - I’ve also seen a man tying his neck-tie on the way to work accidentally change lanes UNDER a tractor-trailer - with a serious damage resulting, but thankfully, because it happened at slow speed, no loss of life.

Agree with you, WillBerry – As I noted elsewhere, research shows the effect of talking on the phone as being comparable to being drunk - over the legal limit. (Mythbusters did a good show that confirmed that).
etocme - you want to legalize drinking and driving, too?
voxjim - I know you weren’t serious, but good point anyway. Germany’s a lot tougher on drivers who hope to get on the autobahn.
dtroutma - smart! Notice how few NASCAR drivers get killed or even seriously injured relative to their far faster speeds - they are always thoroughly belted in.
There are a few people here who seem to think driving is a Constitutionally-protected right. It ain’t. If stupid drivers only removed themselves from the gene pool, I’d write it off to evolution in action, but too often they take others with them.

Texting while driving is just plain stupid. I also get annoyed with people holding cell phones while driving. However, there have been times in my life when talking on the phone with a hands-free device kept me awake and attentive to my driving.

I see MM has made most of the points I was going to rant about.
I just wish everyone I am forced to share the road with took driving as seriously as I do.

So sad but true. What will it take to get people to turn off their phones while driving?

dtroutma, You too? I put a 3” lap belt in my brand new TR-3 in 1959!! And every car after that until I bought a ‘69 BMW that came with belts. My kids never knew about riding in a car without them. I survived a rollover in my first Porsche with only a self installed lap belt.

Oldie! No, 56 Ford was the first. My 67 Lotus came from the factory to me with them. Wife drove it off a cliff and only had black eyes.(NO! I didn’t do it.) Currently have two Elans (project cars) in the garage.

Funny things happen when you cell and drive - octagonal stop signs morph into triangular yield signs – or wait! “No stop signs, speed limits!” (I’m sure you know the rest)

Actually happened to a friend of mine. She was involved in a fatal crash while talking to her sister on her cell phone.
