Jules Feiffer has described Tony Auth best, "His perspective is that of a bemused and often angry comic historian. Irony, never a favorite form with Americans, is his meat and potatoes. He is not smug, and though he can be mean, he is never mean-spirited. Auth is a moralist and an optimist. He insists, even in this day and age, that hope is more than the name of a right-wing comedian or the shtick of a reactionary president."

Actually “obstructionism” is not an “idea” it is an action. An idea requires thought.
Simon_Jester said, 9 months ago
To me, this only demonstrates that Repubs are afraid Obama’s agenda will be successful. If they really thought it was going to be a failure, they’d put up only a token resistance and then let it happen. That way they could ay, “See? We TRIED to stop it.”
As it is, they’re setting themselves up for an even bigger debacle in 2010 than they got hit with last November. The one thing the vast majority of the American people DON’T want to happen right now is nothing. And they know that this all the Repubs will succeed in doing if their obstructionist agenda works.

To obstruct a bill that will us in dept for generations. A non stimulus pay off bill that does nothing! Stuffed with pork. Plus the only thing the dems will do is try to pay off the Rep with more money?
Yes the elephants are doing their job!

HQ – we are ALREADY in debt for generations, it was doubled in the last 8 years, with nothing to show for it.
Simon_Jester said, 9 months ago
Then why aren’t the Repubs doing what I said, if the bill is so bad? And don’t try to tell me that the party of Tom DeLay, Karl Rove, and Newt Gingrich is putting the interests of the country over party politics.
If you believe that, have I got a bridge to sell you.

It’s all for the better. The Republicans are setting us up for another 50 years of Democratic majority, just like they did in the 1920’s. Of course, the worldwide economic depression and subsequent world war part will be tough, but it will seal their fate.

Well said, longtimecomicsfan. The Republicans are just following Rush Limbaugh’s dream that “Obama will fail”, ignoring the fact that for that to happen, the country must also fail.
Why do Republicans hate America so much?
danielsangeo said, 9 months ago
What the Rushicans (those Republicans who get their marching orders from the Rush Limbaughs aof the world) don’t get is that, if they hope Obama fails and he succeeds, what happens to them?

We don’t need no education…
We don’t no folks at work…
No repairs to our infrastructure…
Repugs, quit being such jerks.
Hey…Repugs… quit being such jerks!
All in all it’s just
Another brick in the wall.

Pink Floyd….yah! ‘The Wall’ is going to be great fodder come election time. Our educational system has been in the toilet for a long time and now that we have a chance to bring it back, the repubs just flushed it. Betja they send their kids to private schools.

MadMan and all, there was one wingnutpost that identified the allication for education as wasteful pork that didn’t create any jobs. My Mom was an educator for over forty years and had a favorite saying. “If you think the price of education is expensive, try the price of ignorance”. Simon_J, I think my Mom would have smiled if she were to read your post.

Yes, well when I see Republicans citing Jefferson, it always puts me in mind of another quote, this one from William Shakespeare:

hq - the bill that has put us in debt for generations is the spending of the bush administration. Just go look at the numbers. THis is icing on the cake in comparison…and if fiscal prudence and sensible governance had been practiced rather than simply preached by the bushians, we wouldn’t be in a bailout today at all. This could have been prevented. Economists have been forecasting economic collapse for some time. The warnings were ignored and now we all get to pay the price.

A Republican shill in alt.politics.democrats asked the other day if it was obstructionism when the Dems did it while the Reps had the majority. I told him yes, the Dems were obstructionist but it still didn’t keep Bush from doubling the national debt.
motivemagus said, 9 months ago
The Dems would only have been obstructionist had they actually obstructed. They seemed willing to bend over for Bush in a heartbeat, which the Republicans took advantage of. We can only despise their lack of courage.
longtimecomicsfan said, 9 months ago
And today we have the faithful, loyal, patriotic Republicans showing that they won’t even work with a President that disagrees with them.

Does nothing?!? ROFLMAO! Millions will be going back to work, and the nation’s infrastructure will be improved.
The “pork” in this bill has been debunked time and again; any pork that Pelosi put in has been taken out, which may well have been on purpse for negotiating purposes. Not that the GOP has actually negotated, they’ve merely slammed the bill without any constructive alternatives. Tax cut after tax cut isn’t going to help.
Now there are some GOP Senators telling their constituents about a great local project “they” rammed through. Though, of course they didn’t actually vote for it….
