Jules Feiffer has described Tony Auth best, "His perspective is that of a bemused and often angry comic historian. Irony, never a favorite form with Americans, is his meat and potatoes. He is not smug, and though he can be mean, he is never mean-spirited. Auth is a moralist and an optimist. He insists, even in this day and age, that hope is more than the name of a right-wing comedian or the shtick of a reactionary president."

Tall order … though the thought is on the money.

This was the most resonant point of yesterday’s speech for me.

I don’t think those things have ever been put away any time in history. We can hope though!

There is hardly anything about the Bush years that shouldn’t be put aside.

I noticed they never showed Bush squirming while he was forced to sit there hearing his legacy being trashed. In the future maybe the outgoing POTUS can leave before the newbies’ speech? Obama may even like the opportunity, who knows??

They didn’t?
Noooo, that’s not possible…the American media wouldn’t give Bush that courtesy; it’s a LIBERAL media, right oldegodad?

I watched CNN until the commentators got on my nerves, then switched to C-SPAN for gloriously simple coverage: what was there. Should have watched them from the beginning. The parade was not only better shown (and had more space on the screen), but actually listed who the bands were, which the other stations couldn’t be bothered to do.

lego, I watched a few times on CBS at work (yes they let us take some time to see it live–very cool), and at home later on CNN & MSNBC. I saw several shots of Bush during the speech. He didn’t seem too bothered by it; but I don’t want to try to read too much into short shots of expressions. I think if nothing else he’s shown us he has quite a thick skin.
