Jules Feiffer has described Tony Auth best, "His perspective is that of a bemused and often angry comic historian. Irony, never a favorite form with Americans, is his meat and potatoes. He is not smug, and though he can be mean, he is never mean-spirited. Auth is a moralist and an optimist. He insists, even in this day and age, that hope is more than the name of a right-wing comedian or the shtick of a reactionary president."

At this point, I seriously wondered if McCain’s restraint was merely another political stunt to make him look decent again because the ads aren’t working. Because I haven’t noticed Palin scaling back, nor McCain’s negative campaign ads.
I’d like to believe he has realized he has gone too far in his smear campaign, I really would. But he’s publicly violated too many of the principles he espouses. My cynicism is too high at this late stage.

I don’t think his refutations of the hate have risen to the level of fire extinguisher… more like an eye-dropper or a spray bottle.

I wrote something (a comment on another cartoon) about this thing.
People, to sell all sorts of junk (from political ideas to toothpaste) rely heavily on fear. When animal and humans are scared, they become violent to protect themselves from real or perceived threats. Therefore, you can’t spread fear without also spreading violence.
With all those “He’s an arab (enemy)” rethoric (mostly not made by the official McCainPalin campaing, but by some right-wing elements and the tinfoil hat crowd), some people go to far. Search the internet and you’ll find loads of tin-foil topped pseudo-christians who think Obama is the antichrist. If he’s elected, like the polls seem to predict, it is very possible for an assassination plot to emerge among these folks.

CF, you’re right on the money but it’s not new. Look up Thomas Jefferson and read what the president of Yale had to say.
