Where you been, Tom? You know, the cartoon has a good point. A driver-less car is better than a car driven by someone intent on driving it off the road. For years a certain group of people have been devoting themselves to the proposition that the USA, as a nation, acting under and through the present Constitution, can do nothing right. When elected to office, they do all they can do prove that proposition is true by sabotaging every effort to do anything, or solve any problem. Thus proving themselves right in the first place! And it has been a winning strategy for them! Perhaps they were right all along. It doesn’t make a lot of sense to build a car when you know that sooner rather than later a person is going to be behind the wheel whose intention is to wreck it. Perhaps it is foolish to dream of a nation that uses its collective power to do good things for the benefit of its citizens. Perhaps we should, like those others, give up on the nation as such, and just work to create and strengthen organizations and structures outside of state and federal ones, to do the things that need doing, to do the things that other nations do for themselves as nations. Then we could devote our political energies to ensuring that at least the nation “does no harm” and does not stand in the way. Perhaps. The thing that I find remarkable is that the group who seem most intent of castrating the nation and rendering it as impotent as possible, as little able to actually serve and protect its people as possible, who act to infantilize the government and make it good for nothing ALSO have the gall to call themselves patriotic and wave the flag that their other actions only serve to embarrass.
