We already have many sensible gun laws, in some states and places. We also have some excessively strict gun laws, in some states and places. We also have some excessively lax gun laws, in some states and places. Unfortunately, this is where our odd balance of federal and state and local authority does not serve us well. Regulating weapons in one place while leaving things wide open in another, transportation being what it is, is like the old joke about restaurants: "Having a ‘no smoking’ SECTION in a restaurant is like having a ‘no pissing’ section in a swimming pool. On the other hand, rules that make sense in an urban community of five million riddled with gang violence and drugs, appear absurd in a rural community of five thousand where there hasn’t been a murder in a decade, and vice versa.
