“The train’s front axle left the track after hitting a derailer,….”.

    What? You’re kidding!

As opposed to the airplanes in San Francisco and Alabama? Trains are safer, especially when tested, than any road in America. Just as the Americans with Disabilities Act is much safer and cheaper than the GOP “status quo” plan.

It takes money to run a train system, PAJ. Republicans (who currently control the House) have been refusing to fund Amtrak for decades.

Try riding a train in Europe. A world of difference from the aging poorly maintained trains here in the US.

you want to see a train system run by republicans? Look at CSX, Southern, Union Pacific, Santa Fe…….They run for profit and generally do.

    Public transportation? Not so much.

Again Tom most of your readers don’t care about the Washington Metro.

“Republicans don’t propose boondoggles which bankrupt us”

Does the phrase “Shock and Awe” strike a familiar note?

So, the train went a little further than it was supposed to at 5 mph… let’s scrap the whole line…

Apologies to PAJ. I meant to reply to Omnius.

Yeah, Union Pacific shows their GOP support, all right. For years they leased track and facilities to Amtrak, but they refused to acknowledge, much less accomodate their schedules.

Somehow, someone strongarmed UP into honoring their contracts a few years ago, and AmTrak now runs ontime on the West Coast.

We just rode the train from Norwich to London, UK this past week. It was clean & though not new, seemed to be in good condition. It’s scheduled departure time was 9:30; the train begin to move as the digital clock on the platform clicked over to 9:30. The train was fast & smooth. BUT, the oneway fare for two of us for that roughly 85 mile trip was $160.00!! And the next day the BBC reported that the train fares were going up!
