I take strong objection on behalf of Germany. We live in a nice, old, well kept house THIS side of the street and we don’t need no help from nobody, especially not the U.S. who we thought to be our friends and who spied on us in order to get economic advantages. We despise you now! We despised you before, for the way you handled yourself after 9/11 (Iraq), but now, after we learned that you have been stealing your stuff for years, it’s personal!

What on Earth are you talking about? All large corporations spy on one another for economic advantage, and all of the developed countries of the world (who are greatly controlled by those wealthy corporations) do the same, including Germany. That is simply the nature of Darwinian Capitalism, and should never be taken personally by the individual people of those countries.

And all of this posting on this and other sites about the governmental snooping is just plain silly. If the US government (or any other government for that matter) was truly interested in prosecuting those posters that complain about said governments, then at least all of the ultra conservatives on this site (who are constantly so complaining) would now be incarcerated in federal penitentiaries, and no longer posting on this site. As this is plainly not the case, then all of this talk if just so much hot air. On the other hand, if you are plotting to violently overthrow said governments on this internet, then perhaps you might actually have something to worry about!!

Heck no! The Republicans would want to set up extensive “Helping” facilities and send troops to EVERY SINGLE LITTLE HELLHOLE on Earth!
Bring the troops home, close 90% of the overseas Military Bases, and fix OUR problems first!

That doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. There are isolationist groups in both parties just as there are internationalists in both parties.

Read The Fat Years by Chan Koonchung. It’s advertised as ‘banned in China’ so you can only buy it in free cities outside China. Like Shanghai.

In the novel, the dollar has fallen somewhere below the rupee, the US economy has evaporated, China is by far the richest country in the world (Starbucks switched to serving Oolong Latte). But China is still terrified of the US.

The US has every legal right to spy on Germany, and every other country without nuclear weapons. That’s the basic principle of International Law. The strong can do anything they like to the weak. And the US will be the strongest nation for the foreseeable future, so if the President of the US orders it, then it is legal under US and International Law.

“we don’t need no help from nobody, especially not the U.S.”

The U.S. spends approximately $10 billion per year ‘defending’ Germany. Are your fellow Germans prepared to take on this cost themselves? Lose this revenue? Ramp up rearmament? Do your European neighbors want this to happen?

Allies have spied on allies for hundreds if not thousands of years. I abhor phrases like “Trust, but verify”, but there it is. If Monty believes Deutschland doesn’t spy on its allies let him, but put hackneyed, contradictory phrase here “___________”.

Germany has always been an arrogant, “us against them”, minded country. It spears America is the new Jew, it simply can’t be Germanys fault. Socialists all think alike, blame your enemy for everything.
The more things change the more they stay the same.

    “Obama is a Republican”

I was thinking the other day about how many the GOP’s minority candidates have angry, pessimistic, confrontational political styles. Think Allen West, Ted Cruz or Ben Carson. They need candidates who have the sunny optimism of Reagan. They need a Black Reagan. Then I realized Obama is the Black Reagan.

This is brilliant. It encapsulates U.S. foreign policy—left, right, and center—for the past 70 years or so. The U.S. might be in better shape if we realized that we, too, live in the middle of the street, and are dodging deadly traffic day in and day out. Should we help other countries? Well, duh. Of course we should. Should we try to remake every society on earth to be more like our own? Obviously not. A little more humility would do wonders for the the U.S..
