When Eisenhower was president, a stock comic character was an elderly person suffering from early dementia who went around saying, ‘Bring back Coolidge!’ (among other risible errors arising from the dementia).

Back then, Coolidge had only been gone for 30 years. Now that I’m elderly myself, I go around saying ‘Bring back Ike!’ who’s been gone for 50 years.

Most Arabs (with one notable exception among my acquaintances) know that Eisenhower forced Britain, France, and Israel to give Suez to the Egyptians. In contrast to Truman who ordered Europe to ship all the Jews who had been in Concentration Camps to Palestine. Most of those European Jews just wanted to go home, but Truman figured he had nothing to lose, since he was so far behind in the polls, and by forcing the Europeans to send all those Jews to Palestine, he figured he’d get some votes (and he did).

And no other US president has done much to help ordinary Arabs.

But I know one Arab who keeps saying, ‘America great Satan. American Army and Israeli army try to keep Suez, but Nasser defeat them and kick them out of Egypt.’

Other Arabs have tried to correct him, but he knows better. Last night, a sane Arab told me, ‘We don’t blame the US. The problems in the Middle East were caused by the British.’

And Eisenhower was the only president who really DID anything to try to correct any of those problems (the others either did nothing but talk, or, in the case of Truman and Bush, Jr, made things even worse).

Good comment, Michael. Too many people have forgotten their history lessons from school and as we’ve been warned, those who fail to learn from history…..
On a lighter note, I have six Eisenhower election buttons including several “I Like Ike” buttons.
    He was a good man.
And so are you, I think.

“But also those that live only history make no headway into the present.”

You make a good point here. Compared to Western Europe, the Middle East was pretty peaceful for the last 2,000 years. Intractable foes have managed to come to terms before. The problem with Israel & Palestine has been extremists on both sides derailing any negotiation. I have to wonder if watching Syria disintegrate is making the Palestinians rethink their options.

As long as the USA is explicitly on the side of Israel it cannot be a neutral negotiator. It will always side with Israel no matter what is said it is what is done.

The Palestinians have few options as more of their land is taken away bit by bit. The rest is walled off. They are wholly dependent on Israel who makes sure they get far less than they need.

Nasser nationalized the canal, after the U.S. & Britain withdrew financing for the Aswan Dam. This made him incredibly popular in the Arab world, as well as Egypt.

I have to laugh at the guy who thinks Nasser drove out the French, British & Israeli occupiers. The canal would be part of Israel if Ike had not intervened. I know Arabs don’t like to be reminded of the humiliating defeats they suffered every time they fought with Israel, Of course, there are still plenty of Americans who think we could’ve won in Vietnam.

The Swift Boat group lied about John Kerry. Those veterans who served WITH HIM absolutely denied the scummy falsehoods promoted by the Swift Boat veterans, who were put together by a scummy right wing attack artist.

Peace will be achieved in the MIddle East when the last Jew, Arab(Both Semites), Muslim, Jew and Christian(religious affiliation), have all died. Ethics and intra-tribal fighting in the first two, the curse of “religious piety”, read intolerance and hypocrisy, in the latter.

Living in History, that is, the Past, is unwise. I feel those who resist greater use of green energy are living in the past and because it’s profitable to do so, have no interest in investing into the future.
I disagree with you that it is worn out phrase. It is a reminder of how humans can be short sighted and fail to prepare for the future as we see happening in Detroit and other major US cities.
I suggest those who don’t want to be reminded of the past are people who don’t want things to change the way the would if patent laws and attitudes were more civil and respectful.
Cliches’ are often cliche, but that doesn’t make them wrong.
