    As we are usually focused on the immediate consequences of our actions, and tend to neglect that they have long-term consequences, this yields the law of unintended consequences: “The unintended consequences of any action will be more permanent than the intended consequences.”

    We however must add this: That making no decision IS a decision. It is a decision to surrender control of a situation to outside persons or circumstances outside our control.

    These axioms ought to be cautionary to people of all political persuasions.

    @Respectful Troll

    There was a time when a conservative would try to change things if necessary for betterment and liberals would try to change things experimentally for betterment. Now it seems that conservatives won’t change things even in the face of disaster and liberals will change things just to change things and cause disaster. Rationality be damned.

    “conservatives won’t change things even in the face of disaster and liberals will change things just to change things and cause disaster”

    Actually, I think the two mentalities have served humanity very well – but in different conditions.

    When we live in a period of stability, when conditions and technologies are stable – conservatism is powerful asset for understanding what works and what doesn’t. When we live in a time of flux, when conditions and technologies are in transition, liberalism is an asset to help find a new way forward.

    I agree with you @mikefive, until this point: “liberals will change things just to change things and cause disaster.” I disagree with that. i think liberals will still “try to change things experimentally for betterment.” And conservatives will refuse to “change things even in the face of disaster”, if such change would benefit the sitting President or his party in any way.

    rickf1968, apparently name calling is the best you can do. You’ve got nothing else going for you. Certainly not the facts.
