DC has a subway? I know NYC has one, but I’m not sure if all the trains are running up there yet (thanks to ‘cane Sandy).
.
Otherwise, I don’t get this ’toon at all.

DC has the Metro, yes, a subway. I know that, and still don’t get this cartoon. Maybe you have to be a local.

its probally about the woman running toward the platform and fell onto the tracks with her child because of not looking

@Robert Mills
Would that have been because of bad lighting?

Mr. Toles has a history of ranting about the subway system, escaltors, etc. Here in FL we nip it in the bud by turning down billions in federal funds for mass transit.

Maybe Florida Governor Lex Luthor doesn’t want any construction workers to accidentally dig into his secret underground lair…

Metro stations were designed to have soft lighting, but it’s gotten gloomy in as lights get dirty and/or burn out. And unfortunately light cleaning and repair always seems to take a back seat in the budget to more important stuff like track maintenance.

It’s the second busiest system in the country. See the wiki page:

Lately there have been complaints about the lighting, which can be dim. Part of the problem is the original design (which is lovely) makes it hard to provide good lighting on the platforms due to very high ceilings.

NYC subways have been back in operation for about 3 weeks. Almost like nothing happened if you’re not in the far reaches of Queens or Staten Island.

Considering the flooding of the subway system on the East coast, the Cities should consider speed boat service in the subways!

LEDs are brighter and cheaper in the long run.

Hey Tim Toles, it’s not dim lighting, it’s mood lighting. Please refrain from wasting perfectly good national comic strips on local woes. If you think the metro is bad try taking the bus, that ought to give you a better appreciation of the metro after one day.

What happened to the thought bubble?
.
Does he mean that the token seller doesn’t have any thoughts?
.
It’s the “writing on the wall”? I don’t think so.
.
Mr. Toles changed his mind?
.
Mr. Toles forgot to put what he was thinking about in there?

Having ridden the subways in several US cities, the stations in DC are unusually dark.
