Scalia et al. say that the law can regulate ‘obscenity’ in words and images, but not violent content. Grimm’s fairy tales are very violent, he points out. Really? Nothing obscene in graphic portrayals of violence, eh? Watching graphic scenes of one person penetrating the body of another person is okay for children to watch, as long the penetration is done with a knife and or sword or screwdriver, and not a phallus? And as long as the person penetrated is UNwilling. And clothed. I wonder how Scalia would deal with a video game in which the player is supposed to catch and rape screaming women, if the game were designed so that the raping is done through the clothing (no nudity) and with a screwdriver (no sex). Violent, but not obscene, right? Just fine for ten-year-olds. I don’t get it. Kids aren’t let in to R-rated movies, and sometimes those ratings are only for violent content. The California law did not prevent parents from buying these games for their children, so it only prevented kids from buying them without adult supervision. What is really obscene is that our society thinks explicit portrayals of two people making love are obscene, and explicit portrayals of two people being disemboweled are just clean fun.
