    If you get a chance, watch the documentary “Boogie Man”, about Rove’s mentor, Lee Atwater. Rove learned well from his teacher, and in many ways has surpassed him. Of course, Atwater was hindered in that he actually HAD a Moral Compass, even though it was often faulty.

    Rove still IS running many programs. You know what “is” is don’t you? It shouldn’t be overlooked how many of these clowns were suckled by Rumsfeld. Rove is just the one most devoted to working in the darkest muck.

    Rove was so clever that he had a plan and an agenda for the Republicans to be the continuous party in power for ever and a day. He used wedge issues, like gays are evil, pro-choice is evil, anybody that disagrees with the Bush Administration was evil and a traitor. He was key in getting several Federal judges fired because they did not bring charges against Democrats at politically opportune times. However reality finally caught up with Rove and the GOP.

    Dale, the movie goes into that, and it’s an interesting story (but too long to share here).

    One thing about Atwater, at least as it appears in the movie, is that he really didn’t UNDERSTAND that playing on the fears of Whites would be perceived by Blacks as racism. He seems to actually have liked Black people and Black culture (he LOVED the Blues), and couldn’t understand why his appointment to a Board position at Howard University led to student riots.

    One really good trick of the Boogie Man’s: In one congressional campaign (I don’t recall whether it was Spence/Turnipseed), Atwater’s incumbent, Republican, Baptist client was polling poorly against his Democrat, Jewish challenger. Atwater knew he couldn’t come out and make religion an issue, but there suddenly appeared an independent candidate who DID come right out and say that Christians shouldn’t vote for a Jew. The Democrat’s Jewishness became an issue, but since the incumbent wasn’t the one who raised it he could keep his hands clean. This played to the fears of the voters, but directed those for whom it WAS an issue to vote for the incumbent; after all, HE wasn’t a bigot, it was that OTHER guy! OF COURSE they wouldn’t vote for an outspoken BIGOT (but they could still vote against the Jew!)

    “Student riots”? It’s easy to find so-called protesters at a college. I grew up in the eighties, sir - I find it hard to believe the average Howard U. student was up in arms over Atwater.
    And this brings me back to the Lib bias - “Hide the doobies!”

    Try watching the movie. People on both sides of the aisle remarked that Atwater didn’t really have any core beliefs; he was only concerned about winning elections. The reason he started working with the Republicans rather than the Democrats was that he saw them as more fertile ground in which to sow his talents.

    So, I guess we can dispense with the “Atwater as Conservative” premise all-together? He’s like that guy who toe-sucked with a prostitute while with Clinton; also he’s like Carville-only maybe not as brain-washed? Now, back to Toles’ bias: “Talk to the Rahm!”
