Could it be the last gasp of Republican demagoguery?

^ Ira, if only that were true, or the last gasp of demagoguery period, no matter who wields it!

Maintaining the majority on the court is of course the goal.
Holding onto exclusive positions of power is what it’s all about, for instance by controlling those who get to vote (IE Florida/Supreme Court Decision) you can assure the outcome of an election or court decision, Slavery before emancipation was likewise supported by the majority of voters, slaves weren’t given the consideration of having a choice, of course.
The real issue here is, apparently, transition and change. It is completely opposed by the the conservatives, they’d like to assure future generations the same legacy privileges they’ve held for so long. This is unlikely since the face of the voting public has changed drastically in the last 10 years, by some estimates a full 8% of the public shifted over that time to minority/non-Christian in addition to those already residing in the U.S. Obviously a huge threat to a party whose core has historically been composed of white Christians.

M Kitt – just like their highest goal is the Permanent Republican Majority, rather than good government or serving the people.

The GOP is great at pretense, they’re pretending that they have no agenda regarding the court nominations, that they’re actually the objective party in this debate. A little review shows that Alito publicly supported the concept of “Unitary Executive”, an executive branch unhindered/unregulated by other government entities in time of war, very convenient since W & Co. have proposed that Iraq is part of an “unending war against the terrorists that will last for many generations” according to Cheney. Alito’s appointment is likely butt-covering by an administration that doesn’t want to be investigated by independant council…….I propose that this constitutes an AGENDA.
