We’re already a bit late. Of course, the longer we delay the harder we have to work.

The tobacco industry produces “science” that says smoking is harmless.

The fundie christians produce “science” that says evolution never happens.

The oil industry produces “science” that says global warming is a myth.

More of effects of Owl Gores sci fi spacial effect horror flick.
People it is called weather! Get over yourself in thinking you are the cause. And by listening to Owl Gore and the UN we can cap and trade it to make it better. I mean the “Carbon Credit” is the biggest crock I have ever seen. And if Cap and trade ever comes to pass we the USA will hurt!
    Obama wants $5 Gal gas!

  6. LLeRay

    LLeRayGenius_badge said, 6 months ago

Gasoline will exceed $5/gallon when demand exceeds supply again, with or without government regulation and taxes. If we start setting the price signals early, and provide research funds, people can adjust over years instead of overnight.

  7. Simon_Jester

    Simon_Jester said, 6 months ago

At this time last year, Gas WAS selling for four bucks a gallon, or at least it was headed that way.

Was it because the demand exceed the supply?

No, that’s the same right now as it is was back them.

Was it because of a shortage of refining capacity?

No, that’s the same right now as it is was back them.

Was it due to a lack of drilling?

No, that’s the same right now as it is was back them.

Did OPEC tighten up the supply of crude?

No, that’s the same right now as it is was back them.

Well, was there rampant speculation on the oil futures market?

BINGO! That’s the difference between then and now.

And it was all made possible by the fact that the futures markets were unregulated, just the way Harley and the other neocons like their markets.

But Obama’s the one who wants $5.00 a gallon for gas.

    Right.

  8. harleyquinn

    harleyquinnGenius_badge said, 6 months ago

Jester, Obama said he thought it was a good idea for gas to be $4 or higher but it just happened “to fast.”
The reason it went so high last year was the Chinese were buying it up for the Olympics.
The next time it goes up.. well you have a nice list there that effects the future. Then add Govermnt taxing it for our own good with cap and trade. That will help I mean it will have 0 effect on the weather! But it will make the greenies feel better.

There is an interesting article in May’s issue of Natural History entitled “In Science We Trust” that discusses how and why we learn to understand science even when it is in conflict with a commonsense bias (e.g., a flat vs. spherical world). It gives an explanation for why we will probably never be able to convince Harley of the reality of climate change without teaching him how and why science works.

  10. harleyquinn

    harleyquinnGenius_badge said, 6 months ago

Concern.. we are but a blip on the planet.. Yes we have done some bad things but mother nature keeps going on and she is way more destructive then we are. To think we have this global effect on something so complex and big is just egotistical on your part.
Now I am not saying we should not be good stewards. But I just do not see a spike in weather! Or even if there was this “spike in weather” how it could be our fault! And along those lines how those who preach this phony religion can do anything with the money they want from the USA can change one degree one way or another!

You are now going to cry and might send me to a flawed over blown dis proven web site. Most likely the one Owl Gore uses.

  11. harleyquinn

    harleyquinnGenius_badge said, 6 months ago

    fennec when you assume…
I most liklly have a better education in what happens in natural sciences then Owl Gore.
But he makes a flashy special effects laden movie based on flawed science and he is the smart one?
Well he does exstort money out of people based on the movie so I guess he is not dumb.
But until he is willing to debate and defend his “movie” then maybe we can sit down and talk about the religion of science and global change. All I see is him is running his mouth and no debate.
And Yes I am singling that “movie” because it has become the corner stone of the phony religion called “global warming”

Harley is right! There’s no way we can affect the weather. Don’t you remember the cave paintings of Neanderthal Man entering what is now Los Angeles – all the smog that those poor half-primates had to deal with. It’s been there for thousands of years, and will be for thousands more (especially if Harley’s friends regain power).

HAS anyone seen Mexico city? It’s missing. Oh wait, It’s underneath the smog. Has anyone seen Beijing, China ? It’s missing. Oh wait, It’s underneath the sand and smog.

oh no old bull we must send money to them right away…..
    What?
That is all the UN wants.
    Our US Money!
Tell me how that is going to effect global weather?

COME ON Queenie , you know how this works. It’s called research and development, then you have to build it, install, and run it.
Or maybe you’ll just leave it to your kid’s or grandkid’s.

What is your background in Natural Sciences Harley? You said it was probably better than Al Gore’s, so I’m asking you for a clarification.

Are you going to answer, or are you going to keep on dodging the question?

Al Gore first got interested climate science when he studied with Roger Revelle in 1967, one of the first to identify global warming as an issue in modern times. (The first proposal that global warming could be a problem was by Svante Arrhenius in 1896!) Gore published Earth in the Balance in 1992. So he’s been thinking about this deeply off and on for more than forty years. Whether you disagree with him or not, harley, he’s done his homework. Haven’t seen any response from you other than name-calling and inaccurate attributions to “weather.”

    foxglove16Genius_badge said, 6 months ago

People, like Harleyquinn, who think Global warming is not real think this because 1) Rush or Hannity told them so and hey, thanks because now I don’t have to think!, 2) they don’t want to take the effort to change their wasteful ways, so let’s deny, deny, deny or 3) they’re business profits rely on the continuation of an economy based on burning fossil fuels, so let’s deny, deny, deny or 4) they hate the moderates and liberals so much that they cannot, will not accept anything they say…ever. You can say the sky is blue and people need oxygen to survive and if anyone NOT affiliated w/ Fox News says it it’s got to be wrong!

  26. LLeRay

    LLeRayGenius_badge said, 6 months ago

Simon_Jester, just because there are more ways than just supply and demand to raise the price at the pump doesn’t mean it isn’t a significant factor. The bubbles and politics make it difficult to sustain the higher prices in the absence of demand. Because fuel is fungible, demand does not just mean in the United States. Otherwise, I think you had an persuasive post, and keep it up!

  27. Simon_Jester

    Simon_Jester said, 6 months ago

    LLeRay.

If you’re talking about the steady increase in gas prices over the past eight years, you’re absolutely right, supply vs demand is certainly a significant factor.

However, the sudden spike in gas prices that we saw last year was not accompained by a sudden spike in demand, at least not to the degree we saw oil prices increase.
