Divine selection, this would best be done in the church basement on a Saturday night.

Supposedly the selection is guided by God. My question — if God is really in charge, why can’t he get it right on the first vote? Why don’t they all instantly agree and have done with it. God may be omnipotent and omniscient, but he’s not very efficient.

Because God didn’t cast the vote Himself. He lets humankind do it. Humans have been refusing to listen to God since the first two prototypes were released to Beta test the garden of Eden.

What happened to picking a name out of that long funny hat? That was much more accurate than this system.

The Europeans are happy, a European descendant is pope; Italians are happy, the son of Italians is pope; the Americas are happy, a South American is pope; the South Americans are happy, an Argentine is pope; the Africans & Asians are…happy, too I suppose. Meh.

Actually, the method by which a pope is chosen isn’t a secret. It’s simply a variant on black-ball voting. Every voter tosses some fuel on the fire, but if they vote against, they pick the fuel that gives off black smoke instead of white.
