For once, I’m agreeing with Knight on the subject. All the wolves are doing are what the rest of us predators are doing: trying to survive….

Yeah, so…?

They will kill an entire wolf pack because of one rancher who grazes his cattle on public land and won’t take the recommended precautions. I think I’ll go hunt some slow elk. Public land = fair game, right?

Not much of a rack on that elk. Only 2 points.
If the rancher were to catch the wolves attacking the herd, or at the kill, then I wouldn’t complain about the wolves being killed. That would be direct protection of the herd. And the survivors would learn that hunting cattle is a bad thing.
Hunting the pack down because they SAY that there was an attack on the cattle is NOT acceptable.

NebulousRikulau: A “wolf at the kill” is no evidence. They’re not going to pass up a free meal just because something else did the killing. They are a rather good control on epidemics that way. Especially blackleg fever, which could be eradicated if the “sponging off the public” ranchers would only spring for a vaccination against that disease.

The deadliest predators in our nation have been cattle and sheep. The species lost to these two livestock species is the saddest legacy of “the wild west syndrome”. Eliminating all predators was the dumbest thing we ever did here. Other countries, like Australia, are also well aware of the problem, as well as “introduced” species, like rabbits.

Well, it is pretty cool to see wild camels in
Australia. But the issue of species invading
foreign ecosystems is mostly man-made.
These Asian killer-carps in the great lakes
where basically flushed down the toiled…

…..and don’t forget Lionfish. We Floridians have them killing off native species here on our coastal lakes.
