AMEN! There’s no reason taxpayers should have to foot the bill to rescue idiots from their own stupidity!! (As happens around here every winter when morons go through thin ice on the lake…)

And why, exactly, do they think a man dressed for the beach is up on Mt. McNasty?

In fact, there’s no reason for society to help anyone ever! I say, get rid of cops so I don’t have to pay for when your house gets robbed (because you stupidly chose to live in the wrong neighborhood or made yourself an attractive target). I say get rid of firefighters so I don’t have to pay when your house catches fire (probably because you stupidly left your iron on). Why should taxpayers pay to help anyone ever…because I guarantee someone’s going to think that if you need help, it’s your own stupidity that got you there. And sometimes, stupid people need the rest of us to look out for them. That’s called civilization.

I have seen a woman in high heels and short skirt stepping on a glacier, a whole family having a nice outing in the Alps with their kids wearing flip-flopsand T-shirts and not a map or sweater between them, a young couple trying to ski with their baby in a carry pack and protesting vehemently when they were forbidden to take the chairlift. Nothing will surprise me.

My dad and I went up Rainer in tennis shoes and jeans. Passed a bunch of guys in snow goggles and crampons with ice axes. They looked at us funny. Didn’t go to the top but up well onto the ice. Was spectacular.

… and if something HAD gone wrong, people would have risked their lives for your sorry carcas. Boy scout motto: Be Prepared. I don’t even go on a day hike without an emergency first aid kit, survival kit, extra socks, extra water, and energy bars. So far I’ve never had to spend an unplanned night, but I’m ready if I do. Oh, and I’ve bandaged up more than one hiker who sprained his ankle because he was wearing tennis shoes!

Oh stop! Public safety people rescue us from the stupidity of others as well as our own when we threaten others’ well-being in some way. This is talking about people who basically throw themselves off a cliff, no parachute, no bungi cord, with the happy assumption that “someone” will make it all come out ok.

I couldn’t tell you, anymore than I understand people around here who run their errands during a Chicago winter like they had just come from the beach — nylon basketball short, t-shirt and flip-flops. And that’s the men! Too precious!

No. They rescue stupid people doing stupid things on a daily basis. Trick is, none of us can agree on what is stupid and whatis reasonable behavior. Since nobody – in this cartoon’s scenario – knows the circumstances behind this person being up there so unprepared, it seems a little foolish to pre-judge, especially if their life is in danger. On the other hand, if someone is doing stupid stuff and has to be rescued, it’s not unheard of that the community bills them for expenses.

When people die because they were doing something stupid, it’s natural selection at work.

let him who never did anything stupid fire an emergency worker.

I am overweight, so when I had a chest pain situation, they should have left me alone because I weigh more than I should.
