That’s nothing. I had emergency leave orders cut for me before I even found out my Dad had open heart surgery. He’d gone in for an angioplasty where they figured he was 50% & 75% clogged and turned out to be 90% & 95%. My squadron had just returned from an exercise with the Air Force in Utah and the next morning I was on a flight to Florida. Dad always said he was living on borrowed time and did so for another 26 years.

Sky, sounds like he had good credit.

Back in 2003 my dad (who will be 77 tomorrow) had what we thought was going to be a single bypass. As it turns out it wound up being a triple bypass. The surgery was scheduled for the Monday before Mardi Gras (he lives in New Orleans, and I in Philadelphia). I told him afterwards that it was a pretty sneaky way of getting me to New Orleans for Mardi Gras.

Mac, Dad had been bombed, strafed, Banzai! ed and torpedoed in the Pacific. Those 2 fish went under their landing craft, but having them fired at you still counts. He was a hard man to kill, and the Japanese Imperial forces, North Koreans and Communist Chinese gave it their best shot. You’re right, he had some bleeep good credit. He cross trained as a waist gunner on a B-25, but 3 days before the raid on Rabul, his unit moved out. I often wonder if the aircraft he was supposed to man up made it back.

MisngNOLA, Dad’s are like that. Here’s hoping his life credit line gets extended to the max.

Skyhawk, Amen to that. I strive to live the way my dad has and does. Although sometimes I’m not worthy, the lessons I’ve learned from that man still guide me on my life’s journey. One of the biggest things he ever taught me was that sometimes you just have to do something stupid to completely understand the ramifications…so I got married. Now I’m not married anymore, lol.
