As a Briton, this story arc has completely lost me. I am vaguely aware of something called “Gilligan’s Island”, but have no idea what it was about.

I will come back when this arc is over.

I only know of Gilligan’s Island because it was shown when I lived in Australia, way back…….. I don’t remember it being very good.

Now I remember why I stopped watching that show. And I was only 10…

Harold Hecuba was a producer who came to the island, unaware of the castaways, to think of his next hit play. The gang put Hamlet to the tunes from Carmen, which they just happened to have because doesn’t everyone bring instrumental versions of operas with them on a 3 hour tour. Hecuba stole their ideas and left them stranded. I can still sing most of the tunes in my pleasant, but limited range bass baritone. No, it wasn’t a great show, but it had some clever bits to it.

I remember my Intro to Shakespeare class instructor being absolutely horrified that none of us had ever read or seen Hamlet, but we had all seen the Gilligan’s Island “Hamlet” episode.

He must’ve had fits when Mystery Science Theater 3000 riffed Hamlet.

I’d say that was the best episode they had. Beyond that, there was occasionally an amusing moment. I still clearly remember being a kid and thinking the series was great — so I try and cut my daughter some slack when she watches shows that hurt my brain.

And I believe, although there was a bit of overlap(1967), Gilligan’s Island used “Watch out for that… tree!” before George of the Jungle.
