    Playing chess against yourself is actually good practice. Your perspective changes on each set of moves.

    I think it’s also customary to move some of the pieces.

    You aren’t the only one (on both accounts) so don’t feel left out. There are other things to do that are more fun, as I’m sure you know!

    I was #6 on the chess club in high school and the best 5 played other schools.

    I look at a chessboard and I see a football gridiron. I want all my pawns to run a particular blocking scheme so that my bishops can get open for a pass.

    You should see the Queen’s touchdown celebration.

    Playing chess alone can be quite dramatic

    Good to see a chess scene with the board placed properly, white squares in the right-hand corners. When I see chess in an entertainment media, it’s usually gotten right about 50% of the time. I guess people don’t know that board placement is the second rule in the official rules of chess. (The first rule is the design of the board.)

    There was once a story about a man who played chess on a haunted chessboard; after he made a move, a piece on the other side of the board would move. A friend of his witnessed this and said, “That’s amazing!” to which the man said, “Not really; I’ve won three games so far.”

    @WaitingMan

    I know I didn’t when a fried and I played chess by telephone, telling each other our moves. One board was correctly positioned, the other not, so everything got mucked up.

    Playing is easy, playing well is just a bit harder.
