Within this strip is an image that many people today have never seen before, and may never see again… a 22-cent stamp!
    But seriously, Pab, Bravo.

veterans are true heroes. from fighting in the trenches on the western front to the streets of fallujah, they deserve all the thanks from a grateful public. if you know a vet, buy them a drink. and, we as a society should do more for vets, if that means helping them to find jobs, paying for their education, taking care of their medical and psychological needs, and finding them housing.

Just watched the Remembrance Day parade in London (on the telly).
They should make the Royals and the politicians watch and wait while the veterans place their wreaths rather than the other way round!

A few other comics that are either directly or indirectly about Veterans Day are Grey Matters Doonesbury, LuAnn, Red and Rover, and The Other Coast. All are available here on GoComics.

DULCE ET DECORUM EST by WILFRED OWEN

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks, Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge, Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs And towards our distant rest began to trudge. Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind; Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots Of tired, outstripped Five-Nines that dropped behind.

Gas! Gas! Quick, boys!—-An ecstasy of fumbling, Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time; But someone still was yelling out and stumbling, And flound’ring like a man in fire or lime… Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light, As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams, before my helpless sight, He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams you too could pace Behind the wagon that we flung him in, And watch the white eyes writhing in his face, His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin; If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs, Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,—- My friend, you would not tell with such high zest To children ardent for some desperate glory, The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori.

    6. Dead Cow Farm

AN ANCIENT saga tells us how
In the beginning the First Cow
(For nothing living yet had birth
    But Elemental Cow on earth)
Began to lick cold stones and mud: 5
Under her warm tongue flesh and blood
    Blossomed, a miracle to believe:
And so was Adam born, and Eve.
Here now is chaos once again,
Primeval mud, cold stones and rain. 10
Here flesh decays and blood drips red,
And the Cow’s dead, the old Cow’s dead.

Agreed!! I deeply wish wars were not a part of human life at all, and do not always support the reasons leadership takes our troops into war. But I am deeply saddened that with all they do, risking life, limb and sometimes mind to the horrors of war, that we as a society do not do much, much more to support our veterans, from the govt. offering more support, to the private sector investing in them in our work force, to any one of us showing them kindness and appreciation.

Lets all think about what we can do this Veterans day to support our troops, more than by just waving a flag around. Maybe donate to a local vets charity, or write your congressman saying you demand they support more help for Veterans! Wow, sorry, I’ll get off my soap box now! :-)

Estimated 1.2 million casualties in the Somme alone. The generals on both sides should have been shot for war crimes. Nice poem, but it’s difficult to believe that the dead would urge the living to die too.
