I can hardly wait to see how HRH deals with the Olympics. I’m sure she won’t be amused.

I’ve always thought the OTB in England and Ireland was the smartest way to gamble. You’ve the option of paying the tax on the bet itself or on the winnings. Smart money pays on the bet and since there are more losers than winners, the State makes money, the bookie makes money and if the punter gets lucky, he makes money,as well.
Is the betting tax still 12 1/2% ?

I’m not the right person to ask, ’cos I have never been into a bookies….But HM Revenue & Customs say:
    .
1.5 What are the rates of general betting duty?

    These are:

15% for fixed odds bets and totalisator bets15% on charges relating to bets taken through a betting exchange (see section 9)3% for financial spread bets* and10% for all other spread bets.A spread bet is one that is covered by a contract that is a regulated activity within the meaning of section 22 of the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000. A financial spread bet must be the subject of a financial matter.

You can check the current rates with our Excise and Customs Helpline, phone 0845 010 9000, or on the HMRC website.
    .
Helpful? I take it the ROI has different taxes.

Kicking Maggie Thatcher to the curb was a great one, followed not soon enough by Tony Blair—honestly, what sort of a so-called Labour leader admires a Conservative one? Ah yes, a moron.

I’d agree with her nibs about ignoring the phone until it stops, but… then, they just go to voice-mail, call your cell phone, or send you e-mails, texts and tweets. And this all before you are even out of bed in the morning !
