Wouldn’t it be nice if some local government banned The Fountainhead for incompetent writing and abject stupidity?

They can’t shrug it off.

Hell’s bells, there are people who tell others what they must read every day.
They’re called high school English teachers!

Canadians have ‘freedom of expresson’; we just have ‘speech’, ‘the press’, and (for the first lady) ‘to bare arms’.

Banned Book week reminds us that small minded people will always try to restrain free thought. If you think Huckleberry Finn is racist, you probably haven’t read anything but the TV Guide in the last decade.

19th century literature merely reflects the era in which it was written. Should we ban all 19th century literature (Twain, Dickens, Trollope, Austen, et al) because of the anti-semitism and racism found therein? Of course not- use those examples as a platform to teach how things have changed and improved since people actually thought that way.

If you have not visited www.bookcrossing.com lately, you should. It is a group of book enthusiasts who live by the credo, “Books Just Want to Be Free.” The idea is to read and enjoy your books then register them on the web site before announcing on the site where and when you will be leaving them in a public place for someone else to find and enjoy. That person should register on the site when and where the book was found, post comments, then announce a new release place and date, and so on…
BookCrossing.com members like to offer book release challenges for almost any reason. There is an annual “Read a Banned Book” challenge in which members are encouraged to read and release books on one of the banned books lists.

If you REALLY want to know what’s going to happen in 2012, you must first read the E.A. Wallace Budge translation of the Egyptian “Book of the Dead”. The next recommended reading materials are, in order, “The Conquest of Mexico” and “The Conquest of Peru,” both by W. H. Prescott. It would be an excellent idea to follow these by “The History of the World” by H.G. Wells. After that, you will be competent to make your own choices and arrive at your own conclusions.
