So far, we have had releases of Windows 3.1, 95, 98, 98SE, 2000, ME, NT, XP and Vista. That’s nine versions prior to Windows 7. Does it scare anyone else that the people at Microsoft don’t seem to be able to count to ten?

Don’t forget Windows 1.0 and Windows 2.0. And NT 3.0, 3.1, and 4.0. So not only can they not count to ten, they can’t count to fourteen either.

Edcole1961: The numbers make sense if you know how Windows refers to itself internally, through version numbers. Leave out NT and 2000, because they were a different product from the home versions that the numbering comes from.
Windows 1.x, 2.x, 3.x
Windows 95 = Windows 4.0
Windows 98 = Windows 4.5
Windows ME = Windows 4.6
Windows XP = Windows 5.x
Windows Vista = Windows 6.x

Have a little respect. This face is from the famous photo of a citizen of Paris in tears watching the Nazis march into his fallen city in 1040.

Little-known Windows factoid:
The “new technology” of NT and 2000 was actually an entirely new OS originally designed at Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) as the follow-on to the VAX product line. The designers included a Unix-like hardware-independent layer, but DEC head Ken Olsen took this as a rejection of the DEC proprietary hardware concept so he cancelled the project. The new OS designers took their marbles and got hired by Microsoft. DEC sued and MS paid (I think it was) $175 million (pocket change) to settle. The formerly DEC code became NT. Or at least that’s how I heard it.
