Wrong! Harper didn’t lose the confidence of the H of Commons, it was because leaders of the opposition parties didn’t like the results of the election. Parliament was suspended (by the Governor General) until Feb., when it resumes, the coalition with likely be dead.

Not quite, Hugh… the opposition leaders were reacting to what they considered Harper’s slow and inadequate reaction to the global economic crisis, as well as decisions such as cancelling public funding for political parties (something that would set Canada apart from other Western nations, and spell the demise of smaller parties - doesn’t seem very democratic to me!). The coalition may fall apart in ‘09, but the fact remains that Harper has lost the trust of the House, and needs to learn that a narrow, didactic approach is no way to govern Canada.

Little Nemo, Pogo, and Ignatz from Krazy Kat. Pogo I remember, the other two I know only from reading the history of comics. Clearly Pab is a real comics lover.
As for Canada, just yesterday I had to explain to an intelligent Canadian what the Cold War was. What DO those people do up there all winter? Probably too busy burning their newspapers for heat to read them first.

It was Mr Harper who did not like the results of the election, and so chose to ignore them. He was governing as if he had a majority. I get the impression that Mr Harper can’t quite believe that Canadians really meant to give him a minority during the last two elections - “this muse be some mistake, I’ll just pretend I don’t notice…”

pschearer: That was the image that popped into my head when I saw the footage of the coalition signing.
The characters are arranged the way they are deliberately, because they represent the three coalition leaders in my mind. From where they stood/sat at the announcement: Little Nemo is Jack Layton (the crazy dreamer who lives in his own fantasy world). Pogo is Stephane Dion, the reluctant leader no one really wants and who just wants to go home. And Ignatz is the leader of the Brique Quebecois.

pschearer - a lot of otherwise intelligent Canadians take vacations in our southern states, especially Florida, and quite a few even own property in Oklahoma. This could be used as an argument for the transmission of idiocy by proximity.

Looking at my sketch of Little Nemo side by side with Winsor McKay’s drawings of him makes me sick to the stomach. No one can ever live up to that man’s work.

Folks:
My mother’s house was one of several destroyed in a fire last night. All of her belongings, and three of her dogs, were lost in the blaze.
I’m going to be starting some special eBay auctions of TNAOQV stuff in the next few days to help cover her expenses. Go to http://www.newadventuresofqueenvictoria.com/linda.php for more information.

pab,
Sorry to hear that. Don’t you worry, though. There are a lot of people here that will be glad to help out. Good luck!

LOL, I see a couple of these posts want to insult the intelligence of Canadians….well at least we didn’t elect someone who barely passed high school to run the country over the last 8 years…nuff said.

Pab, sympathy and best wishes to your mom. I hope things work out OK for her.
Btw, how lovely to run into Pogo here. And for the Boston Charlie folks, I’ll represent Beauregard: Bark us all bow wows of folly…
